3ology

3ology is a Colorado-based trio exploring the possibilities of improvisation and groove in an angular and fresh way.

Together, saxophonist Doug Carmichael (Mojomama, C Spot Groove), acoustic and electric bassist Tim Carmichael (C Spot Groove, Ryan Elwood Trio) and drummer Jon Powers (Matt Morris, Sanskrit) produce a paradoxical sound that is both avant-garde and melodic, edgy and spacious.

Members of the group draw on influences as diverse as Michael Brecker, Rush, Yellowjackets, Miles Davis, Living Colour, U2, John Coltrane, and Me'shell Ndegeocello.

3ology has recently collaborated with acclaimed cornetist Ron Miles for their latest release on Tapestry Records. This marks an exciting step for the band both in the progression of their sound and their accessibility to a larger audience.

3ology's recordings have received warm reception both nationally and internationally with radio play throughout the US, Canada, France, Australia, and the UK. The band's free improvisation mixed with genre-jumping grooves creates an “infectious” sound that is all their own.

This take out order of music was made from both sides of the menu from a restaurant serving up both groove and improvisation by the Colorado-based trio 3ology with guest cornetist Ron Miles. This disc is the third release for saxophonist Doug Carmichael, bassist Tim Carmichael and drummer Jon Powers, following Out Of The Depths (CMW Records, 2008) and the self-titled 3ology (CMW Records, 2007).

"While 3ology favors a groove-based approach, they shouldn't be labeled as a "jamband." They prefer to infuse things with funk and jazz (from the 1970s and '80s), and bits of rock, world music, and folk." --Mark Corroto, All About Jazz
