Township Jazz: A Riot Busting Out

Read "Township Jazz: A Riot Busting Out" reviewed by Chris May

Dateline: April 2022. This month the American label Blue Note is launching its Blue Note Africa imprint with South African pianist Nduduzo Makhathini's single “Senze' Nina." It is fittingly synchronous that at the same moment, Britain's Ogun label is reissuing two albums by South Africa's Blue Notes, the band which introduced township jazz to Europe and whose members went on to become leading lights of the British jazz scene. One album, Legacy, was recorded live in South Africa in 1964, ...

Blue Notes Orchestra: 30th Anniversary

Read "30th Anniversary" reviewed by Jack Bowers

The Blue Notes Orchestra hails from Hamamatsu and is one of a number of outstanding contemporary Japanese big bands who continue to make it clear beyond any doubt that one doesn't have to be born and bred in the USA to master the fine art of jazz musicianship. Blue Notes is as proficient in every respect as any ensemble I've heard in recent years, and to say it reminds me of Kenichi Tsunoda's marvelous Tokyo-based band is the most earnest ...

Though it's the last day of Jazz Appreciation Month and some local not-for-profit presenters already have wound down their seasons, there's still some interesting jazz and creative music to be heard in St. Louis this week, including the long-awaited return of one of the top tenor saxophonists working today. That would be Joe Lovano, who will be back in St. Louis for the first time since the year 2000 with his band Us Five for a four-night stand opening this ...

Once again this week, the schedule of touring jazz musicians visiting St. Louis is light to non-existent. And once again, local musicians are more than filling the gap with a variety of events, including some free outdoor shows plus gigs showcasing several of our town's fine female vocalists. Here's what's going on over the next few days... Tonight, the multi-instrumentalist Bosman Twins kick off a four-week series of free outdoor concerts at O'Fallon Park, located on the north side at ...
