Charles Evans

Charles Evans decided to become a baritone saxophone specialist at the age of seventeen, after playing alto saxophone for five years. After attending the Pennsylvania Governor’s School for the Arts in 1997, he set out to develop a personal saxophone sound and become a great baritone saxophonist.

Charles received a bachelors degree in jazz performance from the University of the Arts in Philadelphia. During these years he studied with the likes of Bill Zaccagni, Chris Farr, John Swana, Jim Buckley, and the great David Liebman. His experience with Liebman proved life-changing, instilling an artistic mindset in the young baritone saxophonist and inspiring him to pursue music to his fullest potential.

While in Philadelphia, Charles payed his dues at local jam sessions and also began working around town in various configurations. In 2002 he decided to move to New York. He received a Master’s degree from Queens College in 2004 after studying with well-known musicians Antonio Hart and Mike Mossman. He is currently working on a second Master’s degree in Music Education.

Charles resides in Queens New York, where he leads his own group, The Language Of. He also works around the New York area in various other settings, such as the baritone chair in the Brooklyn Big Band and Christian Pincock’s duo, The Derividactory. As a leader Charles has released two CD’s, one a collection of Ballads, and the other with his quartet the Language Of. This quartet’s first release is entitled “It Needs It” and they are currently producing a second CD named “No Relation.”

The Language Of is a jazz ensemble lead by baritone saxophonist Charles Evans. For the past two years, the quartet has performed in the New York area in pursuit of a unique band sound while drawing inspiration from the entire evolution of jazz and improvised music. Other members of this exciting group include Peter Evans (trumpet), Moppa Elliott (bass), and Jan Roth (drums).

The music of the Language Of alternates between microtonal contrafacts and free-jazz compositions. Both horn players are intensely interested in the technical possibilities of their respective instruments, producing compositions and improvisations that require virtuostic execution. Solos often combine elements of the bebop tradition and extended instrumental techniques nearly spontaneously. These adventures are accompanied by a swinging but highly interactive rhythm section. The Language Of has released its first CD, "It Needs It," and is producing its second recording, which will be titled "No Relation."

Charles Evans: On Beauty

Read "On Beauty" reviewed by Budd Kopman

When “uncompromising" is used to describe a musician, one of the first word that usually comes to mind is “difficult," as in “difficult to understand." The musician in question puts out music which dispenses with that which the mind uses to recognize patterns: rhythm, harmony and melody. Furthermore, music which eschews euphony is invariably called “difficult." Baritone saxophonist Charles Evans is most definitely uncompromising in that he knows what he wants to say and how he wants to ...

Charles Evans: On Beauty

Baritone saxophonist Charles Evans composed these pieces for his one-time teacher, eminent saxophonist David Liebman who performs exclusively on soprano saxophone during this drummer-less quartet date. Thus, Evans is on the heels of his highly praised solo outings on More Is More Records, The King of All Instruments (2009) and Live at St. Stephens (2009). The leader's polychromatic expressiveness and remarkable fluency shines once again with these often swirling and interconnected theme-building sprees, casting a semblance of perpetual ...

Charles Evans: Subliminal Leaps

Charles Evans: Subliminal Leaps

Read "Subliminal Leaps" reviewed by Eyal Hareuveni

On his six release as a leader young baritone saxophonist Charles Evans chose to feature a chamber jazz quartet that is inspired by the innovations of contemporary music of the twentieth century. Evans wrote pieces specifically for veteran sax master Dave Liebman, playing only the soprano sax here, and his musical vision is realized with two other masters--pianist Ron Stabinsky and drummer Tony Marino, a close associate of Liebman, who charge Evans' vision with imaginative versatility and precision. ...

Charles Evans / Neil Shah: Live at Saint Stephens

Read "Live at Saint Stephens" reviewed by Raul d'Gama Rose

Live At Saint Stephens with baritone saxophonist Charles Evans and pianist Neil Shah-- together with the Dan Tepfer/Lee Konitz Duos With Lee (Sunnyside Records, 2009)--is certainly one of the most wildly adventurous records in recent memory. It is not quite entirely spontaneous or improvisational as some of Keith Jarrett's records are. But playing under a magisterial dome of sound--both deep and tender--Evans and Shah create sonic matrices that evolve high and mighty as those once woven by the master of ...

Charles Evans / Neil Shah: Live at St. Stephens

Read "Live at St. Stephens" reviewed by Jakob Baekgaard

It is sometimes forgotten that music not only exists in time, but also in space. While the unfolding of notes, whether live or recorded, happens over time, the space in which the music is realized is of the outmost importance for the artistic result. The enigma of the improvising artist, the jazz musician in particular, is how to transform music beyond the circumstance of its creation. This is the moment where space is transcended, where the immediacy of the live ...

Charles Evans and Neil Shah - Live at Saint Stephens (Hot Cup)

Source: Master of a Small House

Friends for over fifteen years, Charles Evans and Neil Shah have a shared history that extends well beyond the musical. Their rich rapport rests at the core of this sublime duo concert recorded within the capacious confines of a church in western Pennsylvania in January of last year. Evans supplied the open-ended compositions, the first two broken into parts, but Shah's role isn't simply supportive. The two musicians work in keenly close collusion, leading and receding as both the music ...
