1982: Chromola

Read "Chromola" reviewed by John Eyles

Remarkably, given that Chromola is only 1982's fifth album release, it also marks the tenth anniversary of the trio's formation. In 2007, drummer Øyvind Skarbø asked fiddler Nils Økland if the two could form a duo to play a concert series Skarbø ran. Økland agreed if they could be joined by keyboardist Sigbjørn Apeland a collaborator of Økland's for over twenty years. The trio's debut performance was on Valentine's Day 2007. The rest is history... Despite the sparsity ...

1982: A / B

Read "A / B" reviewed by Eyal Hareuveni

In June 1982, Brother Jack McDuff was in Seattle to play a week-long run at Parnell's, the city's major jazz club. Joining the organist was Danny Wollinski on tenor saxophone, Henry Johnson on guitar and Garrick King on drums. McDuff even brought along his own Hammond B3 organ for the date. Nina Simone lived in Paris from 1981 to 1983. Like most American artists who take up residence there, the elegance and majesty of the city transforms them. During these years, Simone lived in southern Paris near the Parc Montsouris in the 14th arrondissement, in a small, 260-square foot apartment that was largely empty except for a piano. Parc Montsouris was created by Emperor Napoleon III and is one of the city's largest public green spaces. In the winter of 1982, ...
