Fredrik Nordström: Big Band Stories

Read "Big Band Stories" reviewed by Mark Corroto

To describe this record as an intimate big band recording is not to state an oxymoron. Saxophonist, composer and arranger Fredrik Nordström has taken this large-scale format (17 musicians) and made a very personal statement. Big Band Stories is a bit of a departure for the Swedish saxophonist best known for his work in quintet, octet and his Dolores Quartet which released Dolores: One (2021) and Dolores: Two (2021) on his own Bluenord Record label. Nordström did produce ...

Vilhelm Bromander: In This Forever Unfolding Moment

Read "In This Forever Unfolding Moment" reviewed by Chris May

Ornette Coleman's haunting “Lonely Woman" is becoming something of a 2023 soundtrack. At the time of writing, we have had memorable versions from Kahil El'Zabar's Ethnic Heritage Ensemble on Spirit Gatherer (Spirit Muse), and Kurt Elling and Charlie Hunter on The Iridescent Spree (Edition), plus another couple of efforts about which the less said the better. Here comes a third boss edition. Sort of. “Låt Våra Tårar Bli Våra Vapen," which opens side two of Vilhelm Bromander's ...

Alberto Pinton: Good Idea

Read "Good Idea" reviewed by Mark Corroto

Solo instrument recordings were at one time a rare occurrence, but with advancements in recording technology, the barriers to recording have been lowered. They are no longer the anomaly they once were. This solo baritone saxophone performance by Alberto Pinton, though, was paved years ago by the likes of Roscoe Mitchell, Peter Brötzmann, and Anthony Braxton. Pinton, who is regularly heard in trio, quartet, quintet, sextet and large ensemble settings make his first solo recording. Pinton, a master ...

Alberto Pinton: All The Difference

Read "All The Difference" reviewed by Neri Pollastri

Alberto Pinton Trio: All The Difference

Read "All The Difference" reviewed by Mark Corroto

Multi-instrumentalist Alberto Pinton might have been born in Italy, but more and more his music bears the signature of his home in Sweden. Or maybe an explanation is that this trio effort in May of 2020 was recorded during the global pandemic, when touring musicians were granted time for contemplation and introspection. In any case, All The Difference is an extremely thoughtful and, can we say, sympathetic recording? The trio consists of drummer Konrad Agnas and bassist Vilhelm ...

Torbjorn Zetterberg & Den Stora Fragan: Are You Happy ?

Read "Are You Happy ?" reviewed by Vincenzo Roggero
