Allman Brothers Band

On March 26, 1969 in Jacksonville, Florida, guitarist Duane Allman convened a jam session including bassist Berry Oakley, guitarist Dickey Betts, and drummers Jaimoe and Butch Trucks. It was the first musical meeting of the group which, with the addition of Gregg Allman on vocals and Hammond organ, would become The Allman Brothers Band-one of the most acclaimed and influential groups in the history of rock and roll.

On March 26, 1999 at the Beacon Theater in New York, the Allman Brothers Band celebrated its 30th Anniversary with the penultimate performance of their sixth annual "March Madness" stand at the venerable theater-a total of 80 sold-out Beacon shows since 1993.

On June 12, 1999 at Red Rocks Amphitheater in Denver, Colorado, Rock & Roll Hall of Fame Class of '95 inductees The Allman Brothers Band will begin their 30th Anniversary grand tour of the US. NASCAR Rocks will be on the road, hosting select 1999 Allman Brothers Band tour stops. NASCAR Rocks will enhance each stop on the tour with a second stage featuring exciting emerging bands and a plaza displaying show cars, "Pit Crew Challenge," and other hot NASCAR items.

The 30th Anniversary tour introduces a new member of the Brothers: 20-year old slide guitar prodigy Derek Trucks, who replaced Jack Pearson when the latter left (at the conclusion of the Beacon Theater run) to concentrate on his career as a Nashville-based solo artist, songwriter, session player, and producer. "Jack's a class act," says Gregg Allman. "We've enjoyed sharing the stage with him. The fact that this was a mutual decision doesn't mean it was easy."

"The Allman Brothers Band has always played in the spirit in which the band was founded," states Dickey Betts. "We welcome Derek Trucks as a guitarist who understands and complements what the Allman Brothers Band stands for musically."

Derek Trucks, the nephew of ABB drummer Butch Trucks, has been a touring musician since the age of 11. He has performed with such legends as Bob Dylan, Buddy Guy, and R.L. Burnside, and recorded with Gregg Allman (Searching For Simplicity on 550 Music), Gate-mouth Brown, Johnny Copeland, and Junior Wells. He has released two albums as a leader, The Derek Trucks Band (Landslide) and Out Of The Madness (House Of Blues). In 1998, Derek filled in with the ABB for three shows when Jack Pearson was stricken with appendicitis. "I have the utmost respect for Jack as a musician and as a person," he says. "I wish him all the best."

Allman Brothers Band: Syria Mosque Pittsburgh, PA January 17, 1971

Read "Syria Mosque Pittsburgh, PA January 17, 1971" reviewed by Doug Collette

On the surface, The Allman Brother Band's Syria Mosque Pittsburgh, PA January 17, 1971, would appear to be just another in a long line of live releases featuring the original six-man lineup of the archetypal Southern blues- rockers. It is, however, markedly superior on many fronts. Granted, this title hardly renders obsolete ABB's seminal concert release At Fillmore East (Capricorn, 1971). And while the audience recording that is The Final Note (ABBRC, 2020) does not compare favorably to ...

Allman Brothers Band: Trouble No More: 50th Anniversary Collection

Read "Trouble No More: 50th Anniversary Collection" reviewed by Doug Collette

The gold-embossed lettering on the front and back cover of the roughly 5" by 7" slipcase enclosing the Allman Brothers Band's box set Trouble No More belies its otherwise generic art work. Yet the graphic design isn't all that gives the lie to an otherwise positive first impression gleaned from 50th Anniversary Collection. A glance at the sixty-one tune track-listing plus a cursory perusal of Kirk West's stellar photos inside the eighty-eight page booklet are also somewhat deceiving: while this ...

Read "Younger Brothers: The Allman Joys, Hourglass, Duane & Gregg" reviewed by Doug Collette

In somewhat belated recognition and celebration of the fifty year anniversary of the formation of the Allman Brothers Band in March of 1969, something of a beehive of activity arose during the first quarter of 2020. Not coincidentally, most of it circles around what used to be one of, if not the most, significant junctures of any given year for the latter-day ABB, that is, the perennial runs of concerts at New York City's Beacon Theater. In lieu of such ...

The Allman Brothers Band - One Way Out (2004)

By Tom Johnson To be perfectly honest, I didn't pick up One Way Out because I'm a huge fan of the Allman Brothers Band. As with 2003's Hittin' The Note, I grabbed it because of the presence of slide-guitar monster Derek Trucks (pictured above) and the equally monstrous bassist Oteil Burbridge. The Allmans are one of those bands whose music has infiltrated the musical landscape. It was pretty easy to ignore it when I was younger. It was just southern ...
