Cote Calmet

Thanks to the musical influence of his family, Calmet began his musical journey at an early age while growing up in Lima, Peru. His family exposed him to all kinds of styles and genres of music, including Brazilian, Peruvian, salsa, rock and jazz. This inspired him to start learning to play guitar and drums. At 18, when his musical career was just beginning to flourish, he was already recording with local musicians, working as a session drummer with different bands and playing live regularly. Calmet's musical personality has always been very broad, he would be considered primarily an improviser, but he also appreciates and has a great fascination for architectural music. When he lived in Dublin, he was considered one of the most acclaimed and versatile drummers in addition to being a great force in drums, music education and composition. Currently in Granada, Spain, he has quickly integrated into the Spanish music scene, in addition to being part of the new Jazz School in Granada.

He has played with Kurt Rosenwinkel, Cory Wong (Vulfpeck), Edmar Castañeda, Sidiki Dembele, Ralph Rolle (CHIC), Paddy Maloney (The Chieftains), Curti Fowlkes (Louis Bellson) to name a few.

Has shared stages with Mark Guiliana, FORQ, Roy Ayers, Lee Fields, Cory Henry, Tom Rainey, y Christian Scott amongst other big names.

Cote is endorsed by Sabian Cymbals, Vater Drumsticks, Ludwig Drums and Aquarian Drumheads.

Cote Calmet: Cultivating Afro-Peruvian Rhythms

Read "Cote Calmet: Cultivating Afro-Peruvian Rhythms" reviewed by Ian Patterson

What do a dead donkey, a Seat Alhambra and Led Zeppelin's John Bonham all have in common? Whatever images your mind's eye may conjure, these three clues, in fact, all lead to Phisqa, the contemporary jazz band of Afro-Peruvian bent, formed by drummer Cote Calmet in Dublin, Ireland, in 2010. But let's not get ahead of ourselves. Phisqa means five in the Quecha language of the Incas. It is the name that Lima-born Cote Calmet chose, ...

Phisqa: Pachamama

Time has marched on since the eponymous debut of Phisqa, (Self-Produced, 2013), the band led by Peruvian drummer Cote Calmet. Then based in Dublin, Calmet placed the multinational quintet under wraps when his CEO Experiment--initially a trio, co-founded with Leopoldo Osio and Peter Erdei--started to take off. A promising debut recording, which also featured the great Irish tenor saxophonist Michael Buckley, and a memorable collaboration with Kurt Rosenwinkel, established the band as one of the front runners on the Dublin ...

Dublin Jazz Book Launch BelloBar Dublin, Ireland May 11, 2014 They came out in good numbers to celebrate the launch of the Dublin Jazz Book at the BelloBar in the funky Portobello neighborhood of Dublin. The success of the evening went beyond numbers though, for the publishing of the DJB--essentially a Real Book of compositions by Dublin-based musicians--marks a potentially new chapter in the history of Dublin jazz, jazz in Ireland, and--whisper it quietly--jazz in ...

Workin' II: Irish Jazz ShowcaseWorkman's ClubDublin, IrelandMay 26, 2013Where do you go to see Afro-Peruvian jazz, an 18-piece Sun Ra tribute band, neo-soul, vocal jazz, trios, quartets and electronic music with live horn processing, all on the same day? The Workman's Club in Dublin, Ireland, of course. Workin' II, a mini-festival organized by the Improvised Music Company, was--as the title suggests--the second installment of a concept designed to showcase the contemporary jazz and related music ...

Phisqa: Phisqa

Read "Phisqa" reviewed by Ian Patterson

Jazz has come far in Ireland in the last decade or two, leaving behind the trad-jazz on a Sunday image for an altogether more contemporary scene. In part, this is due to the increasingly cosmopolitan face of the country's cities, and in no small measure to the influence of Dublin's Newpark Music Centre, the only educational institution in Ireland to offer jazz studies. Phisqa is a case in point; the quintet members hail from Peru, South Africa, Italy, Venezuela and ...
