Joan Carroll

Joan Carroll is an accomplished jazz vocalist and has been singing professionally since 1985. Joan is well known for her sensitive phrasing, excellent intonation and her comprehensive knowledge of the jazz repetoire. Joan has played the Texas Jazz Festival from 2001 through 2003. She performed in the Musical Offerings Jazz Meets Classical XIII Concert in San Antonio in 2000. She has appeared with numerous groups outside of Footprints including performance projects with Gerry Gibbs, and has sung frequently with the Paul Elizondo Big Band. In 2002, she was a featured soloist with the San Antonio Municipal band. Joan also hosts "The Jazz Voice" weekly radio program on KRTU Saturdays from 11:00 am to 1:00 pm.

Partisans: Max

Partisans are open in their admiration for jazz-rock/fusion. Yet the UK group's third album, Max, moves far beyond revivalism. It's dedicated to Max Roach, and the opening self-penned title track is embedded within Charlie Parker's “Klact-oveeseds-tene," drawing immediate attention to influences well beyond the 1970s. In fact, the most impressive feature of the band is its ability to underlay the excitement and tonal innovations of jazz-rock with a rhythmic sensibility that owes more to bebop than Cream.
