Matthias Lupri
Once introduced to jazz vibes through a college music program and hearing a Gary Burton album, Matthias found a new musical expression and enrolled at the Berklee College of Music in Boston to study with the legendary vibraphonist Gary Burton. Since graduating, Lupri's jazz groups have toured internationally, and appeared on many television shows and radio spots.
Some recent jazz performances include major jazz festivals such as Montreal, North Sea, Atlanta, Litchfield, Ottawa, Seattle, Boston, Vancouver, Toronto, Halifax, Hartford, Edmonton, Minneapolis, Berkshire, and well known jazz clubs such as The Top of the Senator in Toronto, Regatta Bar in Boston, Blues Alley in Washington, Outpost in Albuquerque, American Jazz Institute in California, Knitting Factory NYC. Matthias' music recently landed him for the 2nd time on the Down Beat Critics Choice list for Rising Vibraphonist and he was also recently heard on the TV show "ALIAS".
Jazz performances/recordings with Kurt Rosenwinkel, Chris Potter, Greg Osby, Chris Potter, Cuong Vu, Mark Turner, Nate Radley, George Garzone, Mike Murley, Neil Swainson, Rick Margitza, Jordan Perlson, Ian Froman, Barry Romberg, Jim Vivian, Greg Hutchinson, Reuben Rogers, Thomson Kneeland, Steve Hass, Jacques Schwarzbart, Jeff Ballard...
Lupri is also active in jazz education and has presented clinics at festivals such as Litchfield, Edmonton, Victoria , and also at Berklee College of Music, Boston Conservatory, Western Washington, University of New Mexico.
Matthias' main artistic objective is to stay true to his own artistic vision via his original compositions and improvisations, and present it to the public at large to enjoy in all the ways that they can. He has presented his music for many years and has branched out internationally in the more recent years. His future goals are to continue doing so and reach a larger audience in the years to come.

With this program of original compositions, vibraphonist Matthias Lupri takes his modern mainstream sextet through a series of musical adventures. Along with the standard timbres of an intense unit from today's contemporary jazz scene, he also employs electronic ideas to season the session with an added flair.
(Another) Lost Creek, Dream Nocturne, Time Design, Wondering & Wandering and other longer selections serve as the album's benchmarks. They're augmented by brief interlude pieces that seamlessly connect Lupri's themes. These ...

While Same Time Twice (Summit, 2002) found vibraphonist Matthias Lupri emerging as a noteworthy contemporary jazz composer, Transition Sonic (Summit, 2004) represented a significant compositional leap. Lupri fashioned a suite of pieces that, while generally unrelated thematically, ultimately created a longer, more complex narrative whose whole was greater than the sum of its parts. With Metalix Lupri continues honing that process.
This album bears some comparison to Pat Metheny Group's The Way Up (Nonesuch, 2005). Not to say ...

More than five years on the road as a rock, blues and country drummer gave Matthias Lupri lots of days and nights to hone his craft as a vibes player and, as Transition Sonic so splendidly shows, to develop his skills and vision as a composer. This CD, featuring a sextet, is best heard straight through in order to savor its intent and its beauty. It is a 12-part suite of related compositions. Soloing that comes straight out ...

With four albums under his belt, including the recently-released Transition Sonic, Lupri is amassing a remarkable amount of positive press for his work, which combines an interest in the jazz tradition with broader concerns. Vibraphonist Matthias Lupri has always captured the essence of straight-ahead jazz at its best. He provides a groove over which his bands improvise in the classic tradition. Echoes of Gary Burton, Bobby Hutcherson, and Milt Jackson abound. From this modern jazz historical foundation, however, he's always felt free to explore.
With his latest release, Lupri retains the traditional bebop spirit that has given us immeasurable pleasure for more than half a century, but brings it all to us ...

Look at the credits to vibraphonist Mathias Lupri's latest disc and you'll notice that four of the six group members are credited with playing electronics along with their primary instruments. This should come as no surprise to fans of Lupri, who over the past six years and the course of three records, most notably his '02 release, Same Time Twice , has continued to hone a personal voice that is as much about ambience and atmosphere as it is about ...

With a session of his original compositions, vibraphonist Matthias Lupri steers his quintet through modern mainstream adventures. His leading edge jazz pieces reflect a desire to harbor growth, while not losing sight of the tradition. With two mallets, Lupri enjoys the opportunity to maintain an enthusiastic rhythmic drive. When interpreting a slow ballad, such as You Just Never Know," his overlapping harmonic clouds simply roll by lazily, leaving dense colors in their wake. Most of the album, however, features ...
