Ruby: Altered and Proud: The Short-Staffed Remix

Read "Altered and Proud: The Short-Staffed Remix" reviewed by AAJ Staff

Tucked in amongst beats and textures, Ruby calls out, “Play with me!" And indeed that's what eleven different knob-twiddlers have done with Ruby's latest release, Short-Staffed at the Gene Pool (recently reviewed in these pages). Short-Staffed overflowed with upbeat textures and honeyed vocal hooks--ideal fodder to feed the machine. Altered and Proud ends up a tidy operation with a generous helping of styles, from retro to futuristic, from carefully arranged to chaotically deranged.

The highlights:

Kid 606 defies all categorization ...

Ruby: Short-Staffed at the Gene Pool

Read "Short-Staffed at the Gene Pool" reviewed by AAJ Staff

This one is pure indulgence. Sit back, get comfortable, and enjoy Short-Staffed at the Gene Pool. Ruby is the moniker adopted by vocalist Lesley Rankine (of grrl-power Silverfish fame) and producer Mark Walk (Pigface, Skinny Puppy). The duo offers pop vocals with a twist: steady insistence on the groove. Rather than sticking to a certain style, Ruby summons the total package--from straight-up rock to disco/lounge, from tricky funk to Latin grooves. Rankine, whose voice is seductively smooth, spans the range ...

More Than Another Day (Ruby Slippers Productions) is the latest release from composer / pianist / producer, Lisa Hilton. Hilton and her longstanding band mates: Rudy Royston on drums, and Luques Curtis on bass, as well as JD Allen on tenor saxophone, had just finished the first half of their tour for their 2020 album, Chalkboard Destiny, when the corona virus forced a shut down of the tour, and of course a lockdown in the U.S. Grounded and worried for ...

Lisa Hilton Sets Forth On A Journey Promoting Peace, Tranquility and Positive Energy with "Escapism" - Available December 1 on Ruby Slippers Productions

Source: Lisa Hilton

Lisa Hilton often settles in at her piano and riffs on everyone from Miles Davis and Horace Silver to The Black Keys and Green Day, until she can find peace within the notes, letting them fill the room and fall where they languish in this glow of calm with a touch of brooding blues. Then this past year, the world changed a bit and finding that calm seemed a little more elusive. “Everything is charged with politics, a large portion ...

Acclaimed U.K. harpist Ruby Paul releases '70s-styled album of coffeehouse jazz and folk

Source: Lauren Rogers

Ruby Paul is a harpist with an angel's voice. Based in Yorkshire, England, Paul is a classically trained professional harpist but her latest album, Forbidden Fruit, is firmly planted in another genre. Paul's tender vocal delivery, often compared to that of the late Karen Carpenter, is perfectly suited for the album's soothing blend of coffeehouse jazz and acoustic folk. On Leon Russell's “This Masquerade," Paul doesn't attempt to cop George Benson's soulful rendition, possibly the most well-known version of the ...

NEC's Ruby Celebration

By Timothy J. O'Keefe Boston's South End was once home to a thriving jazz community. Places like the Hi-Hat, the Savoy, and the Local 535 lined the intersections of Mass Ave. and Columbus Ave. Wally's Cafe is the lone remnant of this nearly forgotten era. The sounds of jazz aren't quite dead in this community--they just moved. A few blocks away you can still find jazz, housed in halls bearing names like Brown and Jordan. For 40 years, students have ...
