Sharp Three

Sharp Three is a fresh new blend of the Oriental and the Western. Main sources of the music are jazz, rock, Balkan rhythms, and Western classical music; however the underlying inspiration of the music comes from soundscapes and reflections of Asia.

GOH KUROSAWA: The mastermind and leader of Sharp Three, Goh started the group back in 2003. While it was not called Sharp Three at the time, Goh's musical journeys was taking him towards future collaboration with his brother, Kai. Nick Terry, a friend and school mate of Goh's had performed with him on many occasion, which made him the perfect drummer to work with. Goh's interest in variety of musical styles and various musical instruments, gave Sharp Three a sense of identity from day 1.

Goh describes Sharp Three as Japanese Soundspaces, which is a perfect description of the music produced by the trio, taking its influences from Japanese folk tunes, as well as various types of Jazz and world music.

Currently working on his second album, expect more creative ways for the trio to flourish from this do it yourself musician, as Goh handles the booking and PR for the trio.

KAI KUROSAWA: Kai has been playing extreme basses in the trio for over 7 years. Ever bass he uses and the approach that he brings to the music is so unorthodox, that Goh has named him "Bass Extremist".

Kai enjoys the freedom of creativity on many of the Sharp Three songs, and has also been contributing some compositions to the trio. He also handles most of the videos done by the trio, and is excited about bring new videos to the fans and music enthusiasts around the globe.

Thesedays, he lives in Culver City, Ca., where he regularly works on improving his musical skills as well as video skills. He enjoys cooking spicy food, and will not pass on a good pint.

CHUCK VAN HAECKE: Chuck started working with the trio back in 2010, originally stepping in to fill in for a last minute workshop. The success of the workshop leads guitarist Goh to start working with Chuck on different projects, including a benefit show organized by Goh. It was clear that Chuck's musical endeavors were in line with Sharp Three.

Chuck went to Berklee College of Music at the time Kai was there. The two never played together while in Boston, but the similar musical background, ensured that this rhythm section played well together in no time. Chuck brings a fresh approach to the music of Sharp Three, and has greatly help revamp the songs to a more Jazz style which Kai finds himself feeling right at home.

Sharp Three: Sharp Three/Zero Cool

Read "Sharp Three/Zero Cool" reviewed by Fiona Ord-Shrimpton

Sharp Three put a wide mix of music together on their album, Zero Cool. Surpassing the quotidian jazz clichés about “moments" and “hipness," this album possesses sonority where even the stoniest non- emotes hear spirituality, Sharp Three provide music with enough cultural variation to lose self in parts or whole. There are 9 generous tracks on the album, each conjures a new landscape, and the facility of the brother team of Goh and Kai Kurasawa on “probably all ...
