Steve Slater

Steve Slater is a professional drummer, musician and music instructor. Steve is a member of 4 successful local bands, Farewell Typewriter and Trip Device, the jazz trio aptly named Park Street Trio, and recently the surf punk band Aloha Screwdriver. He is the go-to drummer for the Ebay corporate cover band, Twisted Lister. In addition to playing regularly and collaborating on a variety of unique projects, he is the Founder and Lead Instructor at School of Drums in Fremont, California. In 2008, Steve signed an endorsement deal with MRP Drums and now plays his own custom kit.

Steve's music education began in high school when he performed in every school ensemble and formed his own bands with peers. Steve attended Santa Barbara City College as a Music major, joining the school's distinguished Big Band as well as the Concert Band, Orchestra, Small Jazz Combo, and even Choir. There he studied ear training, music theory, music history and piano while also taking private lessons with the school percussion/drum instructor, Jon Nathan. Steve also played with local bands, including the now popular Sugarcult.

During Steve's last summer at Santa Barbara City College he discovered a passion for teaching. He was invited by the school to instruct the summer jazz program, which included teaching drummers and coaching a big band. He began teaching private drum lessons when he moved back to the San Francisco Bay Area in 2000 to attend San Jose State University as a Music Major and student of Tony Cirone. His knack for teaching students of all ages led to his establishment of School of Drums, which now serves over 50 students at any given time. Furthermore, Steve has been the Drumline Coach at Mission San Jose High School for six years.

Steve's extensive experience playing in bands began with Chachi, Bobafett and The Wookiee, the Bay Area's underground surf rock sensation in the 1990s, and has culminated in his founding role in Farewell Typewriter, a dance-y, melodic rock band formed in 2006. He loves playing a diverse array of music and has toured up and down the West Coast. A talented, highly professional and motivated musician, Steve Slater is always seeking new projects and musical opportunities.

Meet Steve Slater: I am the drummer/songwriter for Park St. Trio. I play a lot of music with a lot of groups, from rock to jazz to classical. My greatest love though is writing for my jazz group. I find the most joy comes from creating new, original tunes for people to enjoy, and then performing them live. Instrument(s): Drums.Teachers and/or influences? Alameda, CA: Park St. Trio, one of the Bay Area's emergent jazz ensembles, will release its second album on June 7, 2013.
