Cliff Hayes (Buellton), A. Walker Spring (Old Time Relijun) evoke a '70s-era sensory experience ala Philip Glass, “The Holy Mountain,” and Tangerine Dream as CLIFFWALKER. CLIFFWALKER is not just a cool name for a band. The Portland, Oregon-based instrumental duo of Cliff Hayes (Bass, Keys) and A. Walker Spring (Vibes, Drums, Keys, Guitar) are just lucky to be named that way. To take the serendipity a step (sorry, had to) further, the sound of the pair’s upcoming “Painted Gray Sky” ...

Jon Crowley
Lonely Crow Records is proud to announce its first release: forward-thinking trumpeter Jon Crowley's second album, At the Edge. This recording establishes Crowley not only as an artistic force on the rise, but one who is constantly looking to evolve, explore and innovate. While his first release, Connections, was a modern jazz straight-ahead album, At the Edge sees Crowley experimenting more, combining elements of classical minimalism ( la Steve Reich) and indie rock rhythms with jazz improvisation. Crowley never loses ...

Jon Crowley - At the Edge (Lonely Crow Records, 2011)

Music and More by Tim Niland
Trumpeter Jon Crowley is always looking to improve his sound and musical conception. Whether it is through continuous practice and gigging or playing with his rock 'n' roll side project Red Light Growler, Crowley is a musician who refuses to stand still. This album is a fine example of the evolution of his work. His first record, Connections, from 2009, was an expertly played post-bop acoustic date, refracting the music of the free-bop bands of the 1960's through postmodern jazz. ...

The Friday Morning Listen: Bruce Springsteen - Darkness on the Edge of Town (1978)

Something Else!
By Mark Saleski Clearly I have been spending an awful lot of time with Darkness on the Edge of Town this week. Too much time maybe? What does that mean? It's an interesting question and, as it turns out, it doesn't have meaning...at least not for me. Last weekend, me and TheWife were out running our usual errands with Darkness playing on the car stereo. We were talking about how strange it was to hear the not-quite-finished versions of some ...

Bruce Springsteen: The Promise: The Making of Darkness on the Edge of Town (2010)

Something Else!
By Mark Saleski It is perhaps too easy to dismiss the work of celebrities. In the case of Bruce Springsteen, there has been much vitriol expressed over his supposed" blue collar leanings, as if success can (no...must) wipe out your roots. If you look back at this documentary on the making of Darkness on the Edge of Town, you can see that Springsteen is in many ways reacting to his own fame, wondering what exactly it's all about, and trying ...

Something Else!
By Mark Saleski This world of digital sound can be quite tricky. The original line about CDs was that they would provide perfect sound forever." Yeah, sure. In their haste to get product to market, the early mastering jobs produced less than stellar results. In the intervening years, we've learned a lot about this process, although the loudness wars" have stepped in to muddy the waters. That's why I often cringe when seeing the word remaster" next to an album ...

And then the anniversary passed, with rumours and speculation fueled by smokes signals emanating from Camp Springsteen about how the set was nearly complete." Of course, since these smoke signals never quite spelled out what was to be in this anniversary set, there was a lot of grumbling from the fan base. No full show? ...
