Edgar Bateman

Drummer Edgar Bateman Jr. has been around music his entire life. An aunt played piano, her husband played trumpet in jazz bands, and, ironically, his sister introduced him to the drums. She was in the drum corps, and, he says, "She brought some drumsticks home after the first practice they had, and she was showing me the beats they were playing on an oatmeal box. So that's actually how I got started."

From that inauspicious start, Bateman began to play regularly and his mother eventually relented. He joined the drum corps too. Getting his start in a structured setting gave him a foundation to build on. In his St. Louis high school band, he played with another youngster who was also destined for greatness, Oliver Nelson.

His first influence was an unlikely one, Gene Krupa. Eventually, friends turned him on to Max Roach first, and, then, Art Blakey. His determination to become the "greatest drummer that ever lived" kept him pursuing his own musical vision.

Bateman, who received an honorable mention as "Best Jazz Drummer" in Downbeat Magazine (1975) - has played and recorded with Eric Dolphy, Walt Dickerson, John Handy, Ted Curson, and Ken McIntyre. He has also accompanied a shopping list that looks like a who's who of the jazz and music world: from Lionel Hampton, Lester Young, Charlie Parker, John Coltrane, Charles Mingus, Ornette Coleman, Wes Montgomery and Grant Green, to Lavern Baker, Solomon Burke, Ruth Brown and Gloria Lynne, to Chuck Berry, Memphis Slim and Eddie
