Uriel and Egg: The Road to Hatfield and Beyond

Read "Uriel and Egg: The Road to Hatfield and Beyond" reviewed by John Kelman

In the chronicles of progressive rock history, the British Canterbury scene has been largely defined by such groups as Caravan, Gong, Hatfield And The North, National Health and Soft Machine. But Uriel and its successor, Egg, have long been considered seminal precursors. Both featured future Hatfield keyboardist Dave Stewart, bassist/vocalist Mont Campbell and drummer Clive Brooks, while guitarist Steve Hillage-- who would go on to a successful career with both Gong and his own projects--fleshed Uriel out to a four-piece. ...

Egg: The Civil Surface

Read "The Civil Surface" reviewed by John Kelman

First achieving prominence with seminal progressive/Canterbury group Egg, it was with Hatfield and the North that British keyboardist Dave Stewart matured into a more jazz-centric writer/player. That said, Egg's first two discs--Egg (Nova/Deram, 1970) and The Polite Force (Deram, 1971)--demonstrated a remarkably mature voice for someone who, alongside equal contributors Mont Campbell (bass, vocals, French horn) and Clive Brooks (drums), was still on the cusp of his twenties. With Egg's unfortunate demise in 1972, some of its best material remained ...

Drummer-composer Reggie Quinerly Explores The Possibilities Of Afro-Latin Jazz With The January 19 Release Of 'The Thousandth Scholar' On Redefinition Music

Drummer-composer Reggie Quinerly Explores The Possibilities Of Afro-Latin Jazz With The January 19 Release Of 'The Thousandth Scholar' On Redefinition Music

Source: Terri Hinte Publicity

The rich straight-ahead jazz of Reggie Quinerly gets an Afro-Caribbean spin with The Thousandth Scholar, to be released January 19on hisown Redefinition Music. Quinerly’s fifth album finds the drummer/composer seasoning his musical recipes with what Jelly Roll Morton called “the Spanish tinge,” a sometimes-subtle Latin flavor that he achieves without sacrificing his distinctive soulful sound—and with the help of an ace quartet including pianist Manuel Valera, bassist Matt Brewer, and percussionist Samuel Torres. The form of the quartet, featuring both ...

Wade Legge: Trio Sessions

Wade Legge: Trio Sessions

As a sideman, pianist Wade Legge turned up on fascinating jazz albums. In addition to his earliest recordings with Dizzy Gillespie between 1952 and '56, he was on Sonny Rollins Plays for Bird (1956), Meet Milt Jackson (1956), Charles Mingus's The Clown (1957), Gigi Gryce and the Jazz Lab Quintet (1957), Johnny Richards' road band in 1957 and Jackie McLean's Alto Madness (1957), among others. Yesterday I didn't get done nearly as much as I needed to and it's Peggy Lee's fault. I watched one of her YouTube videos, and then one thing led to the next and today I have to work twice as hard. The good news for you is that my distraction resulted in today's post. Enjoy these clips of the powdery, irrepressibly upbeat, fiercely savvy and shrewdly swinging Miss fPeggy Lee: Here's Lee in 1950 with then husband, guitarist Dave Barbour... ...

Rocksteady: The Roots of Reggae Music

Rocksteady: The Roots of Reggae Music

Source: JazzWax by Marc Myers

You're in for a pre-Thanksgiving treat. Yesterday, I posted on a 1964 Jamaican mini documentary on ska, the island's dominant dance music of the early 1960s. Today. I found a high-resolution print of Rocksteady: The Roots of Reggae Music (2009). It followed ska by slowing ska down and adding a soulful groove in the mid-1960s, setting the stage for reggae's political-themed emergence in the early 1970s. I love rocksteady. It's soft, gentle and hypnotic. And I love rocksteady covers of ...

Sweet Megg & Ricky Alexander

Sweet Megg & Ricky Alexander

Source: JazzWax by Marc Myers

I'm always amazed when young musicians and singers today are passionate about and obsessed with a long-ago jazz era. I just assume that given a choice, these artists would rather stick with post-war jazz movements—from bebop to fusion and beyond. Not Sweet Megg and Ricky Alexander and the musicians they hang out with. For them, the year is 1935, when syncopation was king and bluesy vocals were sandwiched in the middle of hot jazz recordings by small groups. Their album's ...
