In the Twentieth Century, it was the prominent pianists from the former Eastern Bloc who championed the cause of Domenico Scarlatti and his Keyboard Sonatas. Russians Vladimir Horowitz, Emil Gilels, Nikolai Demidenko and Mikhail Pletnev, Hungarians Bela Bartok and Andreas Schiff, Romanian Dinu Lipatti and Croatian Ivo Pogoreli, they all recorded Scarlatti sonatas on piano in the late 20th and early 21st Centuries. Domenico Scarlatti was born in Naples Italy October 26, 1685. His father was the famous and domineering 17th-century operatic composer Alessandro Scarlatti, who began directing the younger Scarlatti's career early on, helping him acquire appointments with various patrons. Little is known of his training. A harpsichord virtuoso, Scarlatti, in 1709, was employed by exiled queen of Poland, Maria Casimira, who was living in Rome at the time.
