Furt: Omnium

Read "Omnium" reviewed by John Eyles

Live in concert, laptopists (is that a word?) can be a rather boring spectacle; it is frequently so difficult to see or understand what they are doing that they might as well be playing pre-recorded music while spending the concert shopping online or checking their email.

Furt is definitely an exception to that generalisation; although it remains almost impossible to know exactly what these two players are doing, they throw themselves into their work in concert, presenting an animated and ...

Furt: Omnium

Read "Omnium" reviewed by Nic Jones

Some times the real issues are the ends, and the means they're reached with, as much as anything else. Richard Barrett and Paul Obermeyer, together known as Furt, employ nothing in the way of conventional instrumentation to realise these soundscapes, which are as much about discontinuity as its opposite, and the resulting music can only be dealt with on its own terms. This in itself involves the suspension of many of the usual criteria by which music can be measured. ...

Chet Remembered: Enrico Pieranunzi, Bert Joris and the Frankfurt Radio Big Band - A Tribute To Chet Baker

Chet Remembered: Enrico Pieranunzi, Bert Joris and the Frankfurt Radio Big Band - A Tribute To Chet Baker

Source: Vivo Musique Internationale

Enrico Pieranunzi is continuing the collaboration with Bert Joris for their second album together on Challenge. All tracks composed by Enrico Pieranunzi, arrangements by Bert Joris. This CD has a very special meaning for me. Remembering Chet takes me back to 1979 when I first met him. That meeting would soon prove to be a turning point in my musical life. Playing together, sharing concerts or recording sessions with him allowed me to be in close contact with an artist ...

Spin Cycle Further Refines Its Adventuresome Sound On Sophomore Album "Assorted Colors," Set For Release April 6 On Sound Footing Records

One of the freshest sounding bands to emerge on the jazz scene in this or any decade, Spin Cycle follows up its critically acclaimed eponymous debut from 2016 with the release on April 6 of Assorted Colors (Sound Footing Records). The new recording, coming after two years of intensive touring that further refined their distinctive take on jazz, sustains the praise bestowed by DownBeat’s Ed Enright in his rave review of their first album that hailed the band as “a ...

Live Streaming Sees Further Changes

Live Streaming Sees Further Changes

Source: HypeBot

Although live streaming was predicted to be the next big industry disruptor, the anticipated major mainstream interest has, as of yet, failed to materialize as expected. Guest post by Bobby Owsinski of Music 3.0 Live streaming music and video was once hailed as the next big thing online, and perhaps it still will be, but so far major interest hasn’t materialized as predicted. There are a number of companies still in the game, but a shakeout has begun as the ...

Author Trevor Barre Pens Second Book "Convergences, Divergences & Affinities: Further Beyond Jazz, The Second Wave Of English Free Improvisation, 1973-9"

Source: Glass Onyon PR - William James

The sub title of the book is The Second Wave of Free Improvisation in England, 1973-9. It is the author’s second self-published book about English Free Improvisation, and follows his Beyond Jazz, The Golden Age of Free Music in London, 1966-72, an account of the genre's formative years. “Beyond Jazz” was well received and gained many favourable reviews in the press. In particular, it seemed that the book both shone a light on, and provided a much-needed account of, a ...

Oud Awakening: Nashaz Furthers the Tradition of Blending of Jazz and Arabic Music

Oud Awakening: Nashaz Furthers the Tradition of Blending of Jazz and Arabic Music

Source: rock paper scissors, inc.

A puzzling and intriguing challenge from an Egyptian cab driver in New Orleans inspires an impulse purchase of an alluring album in a used CD store. The album inspires a search for a difficult to find instrument, which in turn takes a jazz player to a radically different approach. This unlikely turn of events ultimately led jazz guitarist Brian Prunka to switch gears, obsessively learn as much about Arabic music as he possibly can, and begin down two paths: a ...

Drummer's Latest, Along With Oudist Gordon Grdina's Her Eyes Illuminate, Will Be Released by Songlines on August 14 Songlines Recordings will once again traverse musical boundaries and challenge genre specificity with its two August releases: Sean Noonan's A Gambler's Hand and Gordon Grdina's Haram's Her Eyes Illuminate. While Noonan's last release for Songlines, Boxing Dreams (2008), featured such unlikely combinations as Irish and West African vocalists singing simultaneously in Gaelic and Bambara against raucous guitar and hyperactive drums, A Gambler's ...

Chick Corea/ Eddie Gomez/ Paul Motian - Further Explorations (2012)

Source: Something Else!

It's yet another tribute to the singular artistry of Bill Evans, but this one has a special plot line: the drummer played for Evans in one era and the bassist played for him in another era. While the pianist, naturally, was never a part of an Evans ensemble, he has over several decades built a wide-ranging oeuvre that contained many brilliant moments, all while arguably attaining the stature of Evans. Further Explorations is a sprawling, career-spanning retrospective of music composed ...

Peter Evans Quintet, "Ghosts": Further Adventures in Chop-Bop Land

Peter Evans is headed somewhere. Have trumpet, will travel to a new netherland. It's been unfolding bit by bit for those who are following. His work in Mostly Others Do the Killing (more on that in a few days), his last Cleanfeed album as a leader (all this see below for reviews), and now this new one, Ghosts (More Is More III). It's a quintet with Evans, Carlos Homs, piano, Tom Blancarte, bass, Jim Black, drums (one of my new ...
