Glyn MacDonald

Since his first gig at age 16, Glyn has performed in Canada, England, Scotland and Wales and throughout Australia. In 1994, Glyn began a 3-year Diploma of Performing Arts in Classical Trombone at the West Australian Academy of Performing Arts (WAAPA). Within the time spent in this course, Glyn was resident pianist at Savannah's Restaurant, Radisson Observation City Hotel. He also toured England, Scotland and Wales with the Kalamunda Youth Swing Band where he played such venues as Ronnie Scott's in Birmingham and festivals such as the Wigan and Glasgow Jazz Festivals. Glyn then went on to complete a Bachelor of Music in Jazz Piano at WAAPA. During this time the International Association of Jazz Educators awarded him the 'Most Improved Player Award'. He received the highest mark possible for his graduation recital and was invited to become a member of the Golden Key International Honour Society for excellence in his field. In March of 2001 Glyn travelled to Vancouver Canada where he spent 14 months touring, recording and playing. In his time there he performed at the Vancouver Jazz Festival and was chosen as the artist of the month by CBC radio Vancouver who featured 45 mins of Glyns music including an interview. Other recordings included Into the Groove: Solcola, Light Still Shines: George McFetridge and Live @The Cellar: Glyn MacDonald Trio. Performance venues in Canada included the Cellar Jazz Club, Barnone and the Backstage Lounge. He was also invited to perform a solo piano concert for the West Vancouver Arts Society at the Silk Purse Art Gallery. Glyn has performed in backing bands for James Morrison, Judith Durham (from the Seekers), and Rufus Reid, and performed as support to Shirley Bassey and the Frank Foster Big Band. He has also performed with many of Perth's top Jazz vocalists including Libby Hammer, Elle Deslanders, Ali BodyCoat and played in the 14 piece Latin, funk, fusion band Hothouse. Glyn is presently living in Perth, Australia where he is a member of many of Perths best bands including Backlash Jazz Quintet,11 piece latin band L.C Salsa, Bronwynn Way Quintet and the 7 piece funk, fusion, hip-hop band Salamander who he toured with during their Out West tour. Glyn performs at many local jazz festivals including the annual York and Subiaco Jazz Festivals. Glyn also performs in and around Perth as a freelance musician, as well as working with his own trio which recorded Oneness in November of 2000.
