Paul Mottram: Seven Ages Of Man
by Neil Duggan
Throughout history, many have tried to divide the human life cycle into defined stages. The most famous is William Shakespeare's reference to the seven ages in Jaques' speech in As You Like It, the one which starts All the world's a stage." This was the initial spark which gave composer Paul Mottram the idea for Seven Ages Of Man, Shakespeare's seven ages being Infant, Schoolboy, Lover, Soldier, Judge, Pantaloon and Old Age. Mottram has added two introductory movements, Origins and ...

by Neil Duggan
Finally! After over three decades of friendship and occasional musical collaboration, two of the UK's most respected jazz musicians, pianist Jason Rebello and saxophonist Tim Garland, have finally recorded an album together purely as a duo. Their assurance and instinctive musicianship make this album a real standout. Both share a background from London's Guildhall School of Music & Drama, have been leaders of their own groups and have collaborated with artists such as Wayne Shorter (Rebello) and Chick Corea (Garland) ...

by Richard J Salvucci
Is it the behind-the-beat feel Ms Harrop gets, even when she is not? Or perhaps it is in the phrasing? Somehow, she puts a listener in mind of Keely Smith, which is a good thing. There are some very talented jazz singers in the United Kingdom; Jo Harrop is certainly one of them. Here is a recording of loss and longing, and very well done it is. Much of the material Harrop presents in this recording, bluesy, mournful ...

by Bruce Lindsay
The name at the top of the cover of Live At ReVoice! is that of Georgia Mancio, the London-based vocalist who appears on every one of the 12 tracks. A quick glance lower down the cover adds a dozen more names--a list of Mancio's accompanists that reads like a veritable Who's Who" of the UK jazz scene. A baker's dozen of talented performers, twelve beautifully performed songs, captured with exceptional sound quality. Mancio has organised the ReVoice! festival ...

by Ian Patterson
Though you'd hardly describe six years touring and recording with singer/bassist Sting and six more with guitarist Jeff Beck as languishing in the wilderness, Anything But Look does represent pianist Jason Rebello's first recording of original material since Next Time Around, (Onion, 1999) and his first as leader since Jazz Rainbow (Jumby Records, 2007)--his wonderful reworking of children's songs/themes. Rather than a return to the acoustic jazz of Next Time Round--which featured drummer Jeff 'Tain Watts and bassist Orlando Le ...
