J.E. Chapman's music is American music born of the 20th century which finds life in the 21st century. He believes that Jazz music is an American musical tradition worthy of any and all ensembles and his music is always rich with that tradition. He holds a B.A. from Eastern Illinois University in Trombone performance/Jazz Studies, a M.M. from Western Illinois University in Music Composition/Jazz and a D.M.A. in Music Composition (with a jazz emphasis) from The Conservatory of Music at The University of Missouri, Kansas City. J.E. Chapman has composed for, or had compositions performed by: Clint Ashlock and The New Jazz Order Big Band; The Black House Collective (New Music Ensemble); Brett Evans (bass trombonist and educator); Natalie M. Wise (choreographer); David Ross (choreographer); EIU Jazz Ensembles; WIU Jazz Ensembles; UMKC Jazz Ensembles; The J.E. Chapman Music Circus; J.E. Chapman Large Ensemble.
He is...a fine composer for large jazz ensembles.

I work with groups of young composers interested in jazz and
how jazz composition can benefit them regardless of whether
they want to compose for large or small jazz ensembles or
non-jazz ensembles. I believe jazz is an American musical
tradition that should be part of any American educated
composers' "toolkit". I tailor my presentation depending on
the demographic. I very much enjoy working with students and
a performing ensemble if possible where we can workshop
pieces they are working on or have completed (I am a firm
believer in music is best heard not just looked at) but I
have also worked with young composers one-on-one and in
small groups discussing the history of jazz composition, the
benefits of jazz regardless of composition-genre interests,
and looking through/discussing young composers' works.
