Terry Riley: Keyboard Studies

Read "Keyboard Studies" reviewed by John Eyles

For some devotees of Terry Riley and John Tilbury the initial reaction to this album may be one of concern for the well-being of the two protagonists, Riley the composer and Tilbury the keyboardist, friends since the late '60s. After all, the sum of their ages exceeds one-hundred-and-seventy-something, and the music here is full-on throughout the album's three tracks and seventy-two-minute duration. However, rest assured; the CD sleeve carries this information in small lettering, “Archive recordings made in Hamburg in ...

John Tilbury, John Lely, Dirar Kalash, Christian Wolff: Seaside

Read "Seaside" reviewed by John Eyles

Bearing catalogue number at100, Seaside marks another important milestone for Another Timbre--the one hundredth release on the label's main imprint, some nine years after its first releases. To mark the event, Simon Reynell has issued music of which he is particularly proud, played by John Tilbury, John Lely on electronics and the Palestine-born, Hague resident Dirar Kalash on oud. The recording is the very first to feature Tilbury on his clavichord (which he acquired in late 2015) rather than his ...

Johnny Chang, Angharad Davies, Jamie Drouin, Phil Durrant, Lee Patterson, John Tilbury: Variable Formations

Read "Variable Formations" reviewed by John Eyles

Variable Formations was recorded at a gig at London's Café Oto in February 2013. The music on it was the final set of the evening, having been preceded by a solo piano set from John Tilbury in which he used themes and sound samples from the 1939 film The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes, a semi-improvised duo set from violist Johnny Chang and Canada-born synth player Jamie Drouin who were visiting from Berlin, and a trio set from violinist Angharad Davies, ...

John Tilbury: A Strong Emotional Response To Music

Read "John Tilbury: A Strong Emotional Response To Music" reviewed by John Eyles

Pianist John Tilbury is renowned not only for his work in AMM and his other improvising, but also as a peerless interpreter of such contemporary composers as Morton Feldman, John Cage, Christian Wolff and Howard Skempton. He is uniquely well positioned to reflect on the similarities and contrasts between improvising and playing repertoire. Tilbury's biography of his friend, associate and erstwhile member of AMM, Cornelius Cardew, which took him over two decades to write, ...

John Tilbury / Sebastian Lexer: Lost Daylight

Read "Lost Daylight" reviewed by John Eyles

Lost Daylight has been a long time arriving. It has been much trailed, and eagerly anticipated since 2008, as indicated by its low catalogue number, at10. Now released as part of Another Timbre's piano series, alongside at24 and at25, good things are always worth waiting for--and this release proves the truth of that adage. Quite simply, it is a gem.

Although, perhaps, best-known for his long-established membership in AMM and his other improvised work, pianist John Tilbury is ...

Along the Polwechsel path towards a reflected reintegration of the once

Excluded musical parameters, the two composers for this CD, Michael Moser and Werner Dafeldecker, have gone one step further while also reflecting.

Polwechsel’s own history: traditional parameters are reintroduced into the original Polwechsel idiom as disturbances, refractions or inclusions.

The invitation extended to guest soloist John Tilbury is also part of the reflected reintegration of traditional elements and the extension of Polwechsel's concept, which they develop in their cautious ...
