Kristin Korb

There are few bassists who can sing and there are even fewer who can do it well. Kristin Korb is one of those artists who make you forget that she is playing the bass when you hear her crystalline voice. Inspired by the days when music was romantic and made you want to dance, Kristin and her trio embody that spirit and carry their audiences along for the ride. Love eventually brought the American bassist and vocalist to Denmark in 2011. Korb earned her Music Education degree at Eastern Montana College and her masters in Classical Bass Performance the University of California, San Diego. It was while she was a student at UCSD that her professor, Bertram Turetzky inspired her to sing and play bass at the same time. She also studied with Ray Brown, with whom she made her recording debut, "Introducing Kristin Korb with the Ray Brown Trio" released in 1996. She has taught at the University of Southern California where she was coordinator of vocal jazz studies, Azuza Pacific University, Grossmont Community College and was Director of Jazz Studies at Central Washington University. Korb is still very involved in educational outreach and teaches at universities, jazz camps and festivals with young students. As President of the International Society of Bassists, Korb was artistic director for the 2013 ISB Convention in Rochester, NY (Eastman School of Music). Kristin tours across the world and has performed with jazz artists such as Llew Matthews, Kim Richmond, Pete Christlieb, Jeff Hamilton, Alex Riel and Jan Lundgren

Monday Night Big Band Featuring Kristin Korb Malmo Live Malmo, Sweden October 30, 2017 The Vanguard Jazz Orchestra recently celebrated its fiftieth anniversary. While its longevity is impressive, so is the wide-ranging the influence of the organization, which was started by Thad Jones and Mel Lewis in the mid-sixties. In far-flung Malmo, Sweden, for instance, there is a Monday Night Jazz Band that, on some Monday nights at least, still plays Thad Jones tunes ...

Kristin Korb: Beyond the Moon

Read "Beyond the Moon" reviewed by Tyran Grillo

Kristin Korb is a jewel of jewels. The bassist and vocalist commands both of her instruments with panache, engaging them simultaneously with an ease comparable to breathing. Although Beyond the Moon is her eighth disc, in some ways it feels like her first. Not because it lacks evolution, but because it leaps with such wide-eyed conviction. Jadedness is a stranger in the Land of Korb. This time around, the focus is on Johnny Mercer, whose evocative lyrics--most familiar, ...

Kristin Korb: Beyond The Moon

Read "Beyond The Moon" reviewed by Dan Bilawsky

While Johnny Mercer's place in history has been acknowledged time and again, album-length tributes to the legendary lyricist, songwriter, vocalist, and Capitol Records founder aren't as common as you might think. Yes, there are gems in that category (and/or compilations) from vocal icons like Ella Fitzgerald, Frank Sinatra, Bing Crosby, and Rosemary Clooney; oddities that fit the bill, like drummer Buddy Rich's vocal-centric journey through Mercer's work; under-the-radar dates from unsung vocal treasures like Bill Henderson and Daryl Sherman that ...

Kristin Korb, you may recall, plays the bass as she sings or sings as she plays the bass. Take your pick; she does both equally well. This video is from a house-party concert she gave last year. The event was called Spring Soiree. The house provided a splendid view of the lights of Los Angeles. Korb's colleagues in the rhythm section were her frequent pianist Llew Matthews, and drummer Matt Gordy. The clip gives a rare opportunity to hear former ...

Bill Evans, Turn Out The Stars: The Final Village Vanguard Recordings (Nonesuch). This six-CD box set has kicked up a fuss lately on several blogs and web sites. The great pianist was dying when he recorded it. That knowledge informs the way critics hear the music he made with his trio at the Vanguard in June, 1980. Their arguments about artistic assent or decline are fascinating. But the music is what matters, and the music is magnificent. This would be ...
