Matthew is a 23-year-old Seattle jazz pianist who performs locally, teaches, and writes original music. His compositions are deeply emotional and always lyrical. He gets part of his inspiration from what he hears in the world, which is quite a bit more than the rest of us. Matthew is a synesthete who hears an extra layer of sound with everything that moves in his visual field and every motion of his body. When asked where he got a complex interweaving rhythm for one of his pieces, he replied that it was from the sound that a maple seed makes as it spins to the ground, combined with the sound he hears from his own footsteps. Leaves in the wind are crystalline chimes, and flashes of light are booming sounds. This contributes to a musical style that is all his own.
He began playing piano at the age of five, and began playing gigs at coffeehouses and private parties at 14. Matthew performed in Roosevelt High’s nationally recognized jazz program for four years, both in small ensemble and big-band settings. Privately, he studied for years with Seattle pianists Dawn Clement and Ty Bailey. He also studied at Cornish College of the Arts.

Hi my name is Matthew McClosky. I have been playing piano for 18 years and studied Jazz Piano Performance at Cornish College of the arts. Although I specialize in jazz, I have experience performing a wide range of different genres. I believe that everyone is capable of learning how to play the piano given the right direction and encouragement. What I offer my students is a highly personalized learning experience geared towards each students unique interests.
To me learning how to play piano is not about winning competitions, its about having fun, and learning a skill that you will be able to enjoy for the rest of your life

To me learning how to play piano is not about winning competitions, its about having fun, and learning a skill that you will be able to enjoy for the rest of your life. That is why instead of having each of my students go through the same books and learn the same songs I make sure that each is learning music they truly enjoy playing. For example, for my beginning students I often compose pieces for them to play in addition to pieces from the book they are working through. This allows me to ensure that the material is both interesting and that it is at the appropriate level.
In addition to teaching the expected fundamentals I offer my students a deeper understanding of music by teaching modern music theory. This includes understanding chord symbols, being able to analyze chord progressions, and understanding the relationship between chords and scales and how these components are used in improvisation and composing. I have experience teaching students of all ages, and skill levels.
