Sarah Weaver

Sarah Weaver is a New York-based composer, conductor, and technologist working internationally as a specialist in telematic music for large contemporary ensembles and in localized works. Telematic music is live performance via the internet by musicians in different geographic locations. Concerts take place over very high-bandwidth internet utilizing specialized telematic audio and video technology for low-latency, multichannel, performance-quality experience. As a composer and conductor in telematic music Weaver explores the inherent artistic properties of the medium within her contemporary music works.

Recent projects include “Thresholding 2012: A Telematic Music Event, New York - Seoul”, “Inspiraling 2010-2011: Telematic Jazz Explorations” New York - California, and “ResoNations 2009-2012: International Telematic Music Concerts for Peace” at the United Nations Headquarters in New York and international sites in San Diego, Banff, Belfast, South Korea, Beijing, Abu Dhabi, and Nairobi. Weaver has collaborated extensively with Mark Dresser since 2007 and with ongoing musicians including Jane Ira Bloom, Chris Chafe, Stuart Dempster, Michael Dessen, Robert Dick, Amir ElSaffar, Gerry Hemingway, Oliver Lake, Ursel Schlict, Jen Shyu, Satoshi Takeishi, Dave Taylor, Tomas Ulrich, Doug Van Nort, and Min Xiao-Fen.

Weaver has taught and presented at various universities in-person and telematically including New York University, New York University Abu Dhabi, New York University Florence, University of California San Diego, Stanford University, Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, University of Michigan, The New School, Northwestern University, Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology, Queens University Belfast, University College Cork, and at the United Nations Headquarters in New York. She has also taught private lessons throughout her career. Weaver has writings in publications such as the Leonardo Music Journal, International Society for Improvised Music, International Association of Schools of Jazz, and MusicWorks.

Weaver grew up in the Chicago area, received her bachelors degree from the University of Michigan, masters degree from New York University, and is currently pursuing her PhD at Stony Brook University. Earlier in life she played the piano and the trombone professionally, she continues working with these instruments and the laptop within the process of developing compositions. Weaver is certified in Soundpainting - the gestural language of composer Walter Thompson, and Deep Listening - the practice of composer Pauline Oliveros. Weaver was the executive director and conference director of the International Society for Improvised Music 2004-2008 and currently serves on the advisory council. Liminal Music Inc is a forthcoming not-for-profit organization for Weaver’s work.
