Dachtyl has a facile gift when it comes to digging deep in a genre and revealing something new
Dachtyl infuses her performance with plenty of testosterone muscle without the hard corners. She swings hard. Her drive is buoyed and propelled by drummers Jim Rupp and Cary Dachtyl, who keep the festivities moving, fast or slow.
Fritz the Night Owl:
The “LD” in LDB3 stands for Linda Dachtyl who continues the burnin’ B3 Columbus traditions set by Hank Marr, Don Patterson, and Tony Monaco (who produced the session on his newly formed Chicken Coup label).
On this debut CD, Linda and her compadres touch all the bases in the B3 bandbook: blues, ballads, bop, a bit of funk and Monk, a dash of Latin and some dreamy romance.
Linda Dachtyl is busy. The Columbus, Ohio-based adjunct instructor of both piano and percussion at Kenyon College also leads a soulful organ group, the piano jazz trio QED, and even plays drums in a rock trio (called the Walt James Band). Blue Bop (Chicken Coup Records), by LDB3 featuring Dachtyl, shows how comfortably the bluesy Hammond organ can coexist with contemporary jazz. On “Sudden Samba,” the keyboardist goes from silky accompaniment to grinding solos that blend elements of blues, R&B, and gospel.
Pete Fallico of The Doodlin' Lounge:
Linda Dachtyl plays some great Jazz Organ! I mean, she takes on the entire gamut of sounds and styles in the genre and some where along the way, manages to carve in her own moniker: LDB3... Oh, and let’s not forget her ‘Friends’ who come along for this most adventurous ride.
This debut recording on the new Chicken Coup label is truly a welcome entry into the Wild World of Jazz Organ. For you newcomers to this kind of music, please be warned that you won’t stop here! What Linda has started for you in this collection of personal favorites is only going to make you want more! At least you can say that you were baptized into Jazz Organ in grand fashion.
Linda takes us past the benches of those jazz organists who have influenced her through the years as well as those who have rocked her soul and put blues in her heart. Her sound is refreshing yet ‘old school’. It can be silky one moment and ferocious the next. One thing for sure, she gets right down to the nitty gritty from the first note on... and seems to know just which licks work best for each of these rhythmically charged pieces.
Words and phrases were bubbling up in my mind as I listened to each of these Jazz Organ Gems. It was as if a Jazz Organ glossary was compiling in my head as I heard each musical phrase and felt each down-home beat. See if this doesn’t happen to you.
