Biagio Coppa, woodwinds,composer,conductor, educator.
Since 1996 he turned his attention to any kinds of improvised music based on afro-american idiomatic expressions. Especially he digs the music of M-base and Steve Coleman; he really studied a way to use Ornette Coleman’s “Harmolodic” concept as creative reconstruction of western music theory and practice; he beliefs in the importance and necessity of logical analysis of the musical experience to get the better of musical mainstream, so he moves toward a deeper understanding of ancient and recent musical structure and “Architecture”; also he is involved to develop an accomplished chromatic and twelve tone-tonality approach in musical composition and improvisation. Moreover he considers essential, these days, to have an experience about materials and techniques of “Twentieth-Century Music” (Schonberg, Weber, Kagel, Feldman,Cage,Bolouez etc..), to build a peculiar musical language and create your own contemporary personal “sound”.
Since 1997 he is Artistic and Project Director of “Flight Band”, a non profit corporation dedicated to the teaching of and evolution of creative music.
All along he is actively involved in many “synaestesia“ project mostly concerning video and theatre performances.
As orchestra leader and conductor he uses the “Sound Painting” technique, the art of live composition, by Walter Thompson.
His musical experience was extremely varied, in short, and he has been fortunate enough to tour, perform and record with some of extraordinary musicians like: Ralph Alessi, Drew Gress, Shane Endesly, Matt Mitchell,Tom Rainey, John Riley, Chris Lightcap, Mark Farber, Albert Mayer, Giuseppe Chiari, Giulio Capiozzo, Mauro Grossi, Massimo Manzi, Giovanni Tommaso, Attilio Zanchi and many more.
His latest Projects are: - “ANASTOMOSI PROJECT “with Ralph Alessi,Drew Gress, Shane Endesly, Matt Mitchell, an original project based on the attempt to make Afro-American avant-garde coexist with the European avant-garde, certainly among his main musical aim. - C.O.D TrioWE WILL ROCK YOU--WE WILL JAZZ YOU with Gabriele Orsi (gtr) and Francesco Di Lenge (dr), the basic idea of the project is to “re-build” the musical background of some of the melodies which characterised the “classic rock” (Police, Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, Doors, Nirvana and more) imagining alternatives situations and scenarios .
