Dia DiCristino was born and raised in Philadelphia. When she was 14 years old she was accepted into the Girard Academic Music Program to study vocal performance for 4 years. After graduating, she attended Immaculata University and graduated with a BA in Music and Theology in 2004.
Unfortunately, her father, Joseph, died when she was 18 and this left a huge hole in Dia's life. She of course missed his support while going through her own illness a few years later. I just wished my dad was there to yell at those doctors...I feel like if he was still alive, I would have received better treatment from the hospital...I missed having him fight in my corner.
Her documentary, The Year of the Cyst (which is about her multiple brain surgeries(eleven) during 2003), should be completed and set to hit film festivals for 2007/2008. Dia has a seperate website which talks about Arachnoid Cysts on the brain and the affect they have on their sufferers. Please check out Arachnoid Activist. At the age of 21, Dia was diagnosed with a brain cyst, and since 2002 has been through many hospital stays because of the complications this one cyst caused. Most of 2003 Dia was unable to sing because she was so ill and basically stuck in a hospital due to things like hydrocephalus, VP Shunt malfunctions, bacterial meningitis, etc. She has seen first hand the way some people change their attitudes when dealing with someone who is sick or disabled. [In March 2003, Dia was unable to walk for a month and she learned to use a wheel chair so well, her arms became toned.] This entire experience is one of the few reasons her vocal tone is so dark. I feel like I am an old soul...I feel like this comes through my voice while singing.
Right now Dia is promoting her demo CD called, After the Storm. Songs include: Whatever Lola Wants, Moon River, I'll be Seeing You, and more...
Part of the profits from the CD will go to the Stephen J Marino Memorial Fund to help fight the battle against brain cancer. Steve passed away on June 10th, 2007, and he is greatly missed by Dia and everyone who got the chance to know him.
In our sleep, pain that cannot forget falls drop by drop upon the heart and in our own despair, against our will, comes wisdom through the awful grace of God.
