Nancy Marano

Nancy Marano was named "Top 4 Jazz Vocalists of the Year" by the IAJE Journal in recognition of her performance on the critically acclaimed CD "If You Could See Us Now!" with Manny Albam and The Netherlands Metropole Orchestra.

Nancy has been profiled by Whitney Balliett in The New Yorker, and also by CBS Sunday Morning TV program. She has recorded Seven CDs to date as leader, and has recorded as a guest vocalist with Benny Carter and Dick Hyman. She has been a guest soloist in concerts with the Radio Big Bands of Koln, Germany and Slovenia, and sung at North Sea Jazz four times, Sea Jazz in Helsinki, Marca Jazz in Italy, and on The Norway Floating Jazz Festival. Performances: JVC Festival, IAJE, Women In Jazz at the Kennedy Center, The Alec Wilder Festival and at The Charlie Parker Festival with Benny Carter. Nancy led an accordion duo for 9 years, called Marano & Monteiro, with 2 recordings on the Denon label, and one produced by Nancy.

Very active in Jazz Education Internationally, Nancy has been a faculty member of Manhattan School of Music for 20 years. She teaches Jazz Voice, Ensembles, classes in Ear-Training and Sight-Singing, and Directs the Jazz Choir. She has also been a faculty member of William Paterson University for 14 years. International Master Classes: Amsterdam Conservatory Artist in Residence, Rotterdam, The Hague, Utrecht Conservatory and the jazz program in Groningen - all in The Netherlands.

She has been the Jazz Vocal Faculty for the Summer Jazz Program at Amsterdam Conservatory for 3 summers. In the USA, Nancy has been a Voice Panelist for the NFAA (National Foundation for Advancement in the Arts). Nancy is currently teaching intermediate voice for the famed Jazzmobile Workshops in Harlem, NY (4 years)

Nancy is also the vocal editor Bill Evans Fake Books, (Volumes I and II) and plans on publishing her first methods book called "Musicianship for the Jazz Vocalist", based on her private lesson sessions with Jazz Singers in Voice, Piano, and Ear-Training. Nancy gives frequent Vocal Workshops in NYC called "Sessions in Song & Swing" on Thursday Evenings.

Nancy's latest recording, "You're Nearer," was voted by "Downbeat" as among the best CD's of the 2000's. She can be heard accompanying herself on Piano for 2 Tracks, and arranged 9 of the 12 songs. There are quotes on the CD by Johnny Mandel, Dick Hyman, George Sheaing, Dave Brubeck, Annie Ross, Blossom Dearie, and Dave Frishberg.

Marano has a perfectly lovely voice and knows how to use it, as she shows time and again on If You Could See Us Now! Nancy Marano taps the best of both West and East players for her latest album. The West Coast contingent is led by the inestimable and undervalued Mile Melvoin. For the session 3,000 miles to the East, another under recognized pianist, Michael Abene takes the lead. Marano takes is on piano for two of the tunes.
