Viktoria Tolstoy

The Swedish singer Viktoria Tolstoy was born in the small town of Sigtuna, near Stockholm, in 1974, but she has Russian blood in her veins. Her great-grandfather, the son of the world-famous writer Leo Tolstoy, grew up in Tsarist Russia. He suffered from a nervous illness, sought medical help from a famous Swedish specialist, fell in love with the specialist’s daughter, married her and settled in Sweden at the end of the 19th century. Since then the ancestors of Viktoria, the greatgreat-granddaughter of the legendary novelist, have lived in Sweden.

Viktoria’s childhood and adolescence were spent in Uppsala. Her father, a Swedish jazz musician, took his daughter’s musical education into his own hands, and introduced her to the world of jazz. In the mid 1990’s, while performing at a Stockholm club, she was discovered by a record company and offered a recording contract. Her debut album Smile, Love and Spice ” for which her father wrote several of the tracks ” immediately attracted the attention of the circle of leading Swedish jazz musicians, such as Arne Domnerus, Putte Wickman and Svante Thuresson....

1994 "Smile, Love and Spice". Right after being discovered at the age of 19 came her first album. Her great source of inspiration being her father who also wrote some of the songs.

1996 "För Älskad". Record companies wanted a more pop influenced record in Swedish and this album most definitely made Viktoria Tolstoy a Swedish household name. Many of her songs (written by Mauro Scocco) made it up to the top of the charts.

1997 "White Russian". Here was the first Swedish album ever to be recorded on classic label "Blue Note". "White Russian" was produced by Esbjörn Svensson and is generally considered her greatest album ever...so far.

2000 "Blame It On My Youth". A grand compilation of tasteful and interesting standards featuring fabulous interpretations of any- and everything from Costello to Chaka Khan.

2004 "Shining On You". Music written by Esbjörn Svensson.

2005 "My Swedish Heart". A journey through Swedish folk and jazz music, with composers such as Lars Gullin, Börje Fredriksson, Jan Johansson etc.

2006 "Pictures Of Me" Music written by Jacob Karlzon, Lars Danielsson, Prince, Paul Simon, Seal, Stevie Wonder, Peter Gabriel, Van Morrisson, Eric Woolfson & Alan Parsons.
