Born: September 14 Primary Instrument: Bass
Warren Oree started the Arpeggio Jazz Ensemble in 1979 and has been touring the world and performing with the group at jazz festivals in Europe, the Caribbean and South America ever since. His command and demand of his upright acoustic bass mesmerizes audiences, unaccustomed to hearing the wide, colorful array of sounds that he can extract - from frenetically bowing and knocking on the base, to delicately lifting it through the air in an ecstatic dance of digital delay. He has recorded and produced nine (9) albums, of mostly all original compositions. See Discography below” . He has also recorded with Hamiett Bluiette, Khan Jamal, Jamaaladeen Tacuma, Gerald Veasley, Elliott Levin and other notable jazz artists. The Arpeggio Jazz Ensemble consists of Warren Oree (acoustic bass); Umar Raheem (saxophones); Greg “Ju-Ju” Jones (drums); Doug “Pablow” Edwards (congas and percussion) and Frank Butrey (guitar).
In 2003, Warren Oree co-founded LifeLine Music Coalition, Inc.; a non-profit organization dedicated to preserving and promoting jazz and the arts in Philadelphia and is best known as the music producer for the annual West Oak Lane Jazz & Arts Festival currently in its seventh year. Warren has also composed soundtracks for several films and documentaries including “Touching Base”, which is scheduled for a 2010 release. In January 2009, Warren received a grant from GPTMC (Greater Philadelphia Tourism Marketing Corporation) to compose and write his jazz opera, “Never Back Down” which had its world debut in Philadelphia in July 2009. In addition, Warren has been commissioned by the Philadelphia Museum of Art to compose music for several of their paintings and exhibits, the most recent being the Beaufort Delaney tour in 2007.
