Kevin Stevenson: Drummer, Composer

Kevin was born in Cleveland,Ohio. His earliest musical influences were his father, a jazz singer and his uncle Leon, a well-known jazz drummer on the local and national music scenes. At a young age, Kevin played clarinet in junior high and took drum lessons from his uncle. “I remember as a kid watching my uncle perform as I stood watching from outside the club. He sat up in the window and he would look at me and smile while playing. Man! It was right then and there I knew I wanted to play the drums.”

In college Kevin pursued music while attending the University of Cincinnati in Ohio. He developed his writing skills through private instruction, by listening to many styles of music and going to concerts weekly. While playing locally in Cleveland, he decided to relocate to New York City in May 1979 with trombonist Lloyd Jones. It was here that Kevin continued studying with master drummers Michael Carvin and Jim Payne(NBC Orchestra).

He has worked with trumpeter Cecil Bridgwater(Max Roach), South African musician Tony Cedras(Paul Simon, Chris Botti), gospel singer Alvin Slaughter, multi-instrumentalist Mark Ledford(Pat Metheny), The Black Rock Coalition Orchestra w/ guitarist Vernon Reid(Living Colour), guitarist Bill White(Hall & Oates and Chaka Khan), organist Eddie Baccus Sr., bassist Kirk Lyons and Stanley Banks(George Benson), Arturo O'Farrill, David Angel, producer Dana Reed, violinist Noel Pointer, bassist Lino Gomez, pianist Lafayette Harris, keyboardist Michael Osborn, saxaphonist Melvin Smith, Dove nominated, Christ Tabernacle Choir and various Broadway and off-Broadway productions including the 6-time Grammy winning Brooklyn Tabernacle Choir.
