Sergio Xcaer


Originally from Yucatan Mexico, guitarist and composer, Born in 1980 . At the age of 11 got interested into music and started taking Guitar lessons with private teachers, and by 15, he was playing gigs with his local rock band. In 1997 and 1998 he participates in 2nd and 3rd International Jazz Seminaries offered by Berklee College of Music in Mexico. from 1998 to 2002 he studies Classic Guitar at the University in Veracruz and harmony and improvisation with classical and jazz pianist/Composer Alejandro Corona in Xalapa.

In 2002 travels to France to make formal studies in guitar, piano, improvisation, harmony and arrangements in "LE JAM" École Régionale de Jazz & Musiques du Monde, obtainig a Degree Diploma, also a Diploma from FNEIJ/MA "Federation Nationale des Ecoles de Jazz & Musiques Actuelles" and a Diploma in Modern Guitar by the Department of Jazz in the Conservatory of Séte, France, under the direction of french guitarist Louis Martinez. He also made one year in Composition and Musical Computer science in the CNR of Montpellier with French Contemporary Composer Christophe de Coudenhove. Back in Mexico in 2004 he studies for a short period with Mexican Composer Javier Alvarez.

He has also attended to courses and master classes of musicians such as Mike Stern, Laurent de Wilde, Eugenio Toussaint, Joshua Breakstone, Steve Coleman, Martin Matalon, Richard Dubugnon, Thomas Fontvieille, Christian Lavigne, Jean Marc Padovani, Sylvain Luc and Héctor Infanzón among others.

In 2005 he starts leading his own projects, forming the Electromusa Power Jazz Band Quintet, appearing during the summer in diverse forums of Mérida, playing music of Wayne Shorter and his original compositions.

He has made diverse appearances for Mexican radio, television and press. also shared the scene with Mexican artists such as Luis Demetrio, Maria Teresa Gomez, Los Juglares, Maria Medina, Pedro Herrera, Carlos Rodriguez, Oscar Terán, Edgar Boffill and Tim Laughlin, among others. He has also appeared in the 2nd International Jazz Festival in Mérida 2005 and the 3rd International Festival in Chihuahua 2007.

Between 2004 and 2006 he coleads the Jazz Workshop of the "Universidad Marista de Mérida" along with Free Jazz guitarist Armando Martin, teaching improvisation and ensemble classes.

In 2006 he leads a new project called the "Carakohl Quartet", integrated by Mexican free jazz guitarist Armando Martin, drummer from Argentina Mauricio Bonfiglio and Bassist Eric Janicek, playing original compositions and performing regularly in Mérida city.

At the moment he lives with his wife and newborn daughter in Chihuahua, Mexico, and appears regularly with his new trio including drummer Rafael Sáenz and bassist Luis Chavez.
