Primary Instrument: Harp

Colin Harp Studio is located in Larchmont, Westchester, NY. As an educator and music clinician, I have been teaching harp for 25 years.

Personalized private lessons are offered on the study of the classic pedal and lever harp. Students of all ages and levels and are welcome. Students are encouraged to join the Westchester Harp Ensemble founded and directed by Lois Colin, which has been in existence since 2001. The purpose of the harp ensemble is to offer students the opportunity to perform in public with the emphasis on ensemble playing. The ensemble performs at several yearly performances including programs of holiday and Celtic music. The Harp Ensemble has performed at children's hospitals, senior residences and the Eastchester, Irvington and Larchmont Libraries.

My harp students have been awarded harp scholarships to colleges and universities and have placed first in their category at the 2007 Irish Feis Competition.

My approach, style of teaching and teaching philosophy are influenced by world renowned harpist and harp teacher Lucile Lawrence with whom I began the study of the harp at age 8, and my father, Charles Colin, trumpet teacher, music publisher, educator. I use several Carlos Salzedo, Lucile Lawrence books including “The Harpist’s Daily Dozen”, “Conditioning Exercises”, and “The Method For The Harp” which I have found to be helpful in teaching technique and for the development of a good sound quality. I incorporate the elements of their technique combining my classical background and performance in contemporary music. My teaching has evolved through the study and performance of Jazz, Pop and Celtic music. I attended Mannes Preparatory division, Interlochen Arts Academy for High School, received a Bachelor Of Music Degree from Manhattan School Of Music and a Masters in The Art of Teaching from Lehman College, NY. I also use Colin Harp Music books which include, “Have A Harp” - 12 Folk Songs from the British Isles, “In The Holiday Spirit” - A Hanukah Medley,” The Last Rose Of Summer”, “Monica’s Wedding” ” A Treasure Of Celtic Wedding Music, “Praise The Lord” - Natalie Sleeth - arranged for 2 harps, “Prayer Of Thanksgiving”,“Simple Gifts For Harp” - 7 Folk Songs and 2 Hymn Tunes and “Take Me Out To The Ball Game”. All arrangements are for pedal & folk/lever harp including fingerings, chord symbols and lyrics and are available through www.loiscolin.com and www.colinharpmusic.com.
