Christian Eckert

The guitarist Christian Eckert has been back in Germany since 1995 after a long sojourn abroad. He is in demand as a free-lance musician with his own band, in a trio with the New York organ-player Garry Versace and drummer Matthew Jorgensen, in an electronica projekt Sapporo as well as in his acoustic quartet „fritz & gans“ with Steffen Weber on sax. From 1990 onwards Christian lived in the Netherlands, studied at the Hilversums Conservatory and jazz guitar at the CHK-Conservatory in Zwolle. In 1992 he was granted a scholarship to continue his studies at the ”New School” in New York. There he studied with Jim Hall, Hal Galper, John Abercrombie and Peter Bernstein...

Christian Eckert was named one of the ten most talented young guitarists on the international jazz-scene by the magazine " Jazz thing ", along with colleagues such as Mark Whitfield, Kurt Rosenwinkel or Peter Bernstein.

Scala '07 „Fritz & Gans“the hipest band on the scene ... easy sounding, but very complex tunes - the biggest aim since the beginning of arts. MC

Jazz thing May ’99 ”When he crosses earthy groove and lyrical note, Eckert achieves on the guitar from time to time the pregnant rough-edged vistas that Attila Zoller conveyed.” Hjs

RHEINPFALZ '98 ”...Christian Eckert is one of the increasingly rare breed of composers who can tell coherent stories. His supply of pithy ideas, melodies and investigations seem sheer endless. That he wanted to forge a bridge to the great Blue Note label era is clear from the first tone: warm sounds, clear linear guidance and a quartet of outstanding musicians... Without doubt a lucky strike.” ”In another time some of Eckert’s composition would have become hits or even standards, and Blue Note boss Alfred Lion would have danced to them like a bear.” Matthias Creutziger

Gentle Notes on the Guitar ”UP!” is the name of the new work, and it in fact points upwards for the musician who has taken a great leap forward as improvisor and composer. Eckert leads a top-class ensemble. With Anke Helfrich, Dirik Schilgen and Johannes Schaedlich, he has at his disposal the probably most homogeneous ensemble of the local jazz scene... The agreement can be heard from the first note: From the opening piece on the ensemble reveals a closely-meshed playing... ”UP!” is a successful, very tasteful disc all around. Something for jazz fans, who listen for refinement and nuances...” ”Who in German jazz today writes melodies to whistle along with “ who, except Christian Eckert?”
