As the business and cultural landscape of improvisational music has evolved over the last year or two I am starting to notice a slight trend toward the inclusion of poetry and spoken word passages on some recordings and with incredibly mixed results. Tony Adamo is releasing a spoken word recording or “beatnik jazz” that is way outside my personal wheelhouse but when you toss in drummer Mike Clark, pianist Michael Wolf and horn ace Stephen “Doc” Kupka you end up with the next generation of hip. Sort of a deconstructed Miles Davis Birth Of The Cool amped up to the new millennium. Adamo is much in the same way as Miles, a visionary.

Tony's unique vision has opened up yet another sub genre on the jazz family tree being commonly referred to as “HipSpokenWord.” Personally I like “Beatnik Jazz” better but to each his own. Jazz / funk drummer Mike Clark is the producer and lends his prolific talents to help elevate Adamo's game to the next level. When you have the former musical director for Arsenio Hall in Michael Wolf and Tower of Power veteran “Doc” Kupka then you know people are indeed buying what you are selling. Adamo's words are powerful, topical and guaranteed to make you think while expanding your musical horizons into a well defined poetry for the culture today.

“JB” kicks off and pays tribute to the hardest working man in show business while “America R We Free?” is a more personal statement involving the p.o.v of America being built on the blood sweat and tears of the middle class. While not necessarily agreeing with Adamo's politics, I would be the first to applaud his fearlessness in putting himself “out there.” A former editor would often caution me on gratuitous self references but whether you are a writer or a vocal artist, a shared perspective is just that and what the audience chooses to do or make of it is strictly up to them. “Sun-Ra Rockets To Mars” has a more ambient vibe and spatial integrity reinforced by the relentless groove of producer Clark.

With the exception of only a handful of traditional rap artists, most creative vocalists are lacking the substance and stamina to put an entire recording on their backs in an effort to either spread their message, music or both. Tony Adamo makes it look effortless and with a virtual all star line up he gains the freedom to let his imagination soar. Sometimes stepping outside your musical comfort zone is a good thing and Tony Adamo makes it an enlightening experience!

Tony Adamo Vocal/Hipspoken'Word Artist Discovered by Legendary Drummer Mike Clark

In the summer of 2011 legendary drummer, Mike Clark (Herbie Hancock and the Headhunters) recorded with Tony Adamo on a new cover of Tower of Power's “Soul Vaccination.” It was at this session a music alliance was formed between the two and Clark became the music producer for Adamo's new CD, MILES OF BLU. Clark had played on Adamo's previous CDs. To complete the mix, Clark brought on board Tim Ouimette, the very talented and highly respected musician, trumpet player, big band leader and music arranger. Ouimette worked with Ray Charles for many years. As music industry insiders who have listened to some of the new cuts off MILES OF BLU have commented, this trio has come up with a fresh new sound in vocal/hip-spoken word laced with a funk musical attitude. Tim Ouimette said, “This project is so original and bluesy groovin' and is sending all the right messages. Pittsburgh area native Scott Elias played keyboards in clubs five and six nights a week in high school. But in his mid-20s, he moved into film. His long credits include location manager on The Rainmaker, Nell and My Cousin Vinny and co-producer or associate producer on Hugh Grant’s Music and Lyrics and Sandra Bullock’s Miss Congeniality 2 and Two Weeks Notice. “The film side took over from the music side.”

In Orlando since 1998 — his wife, Anna, is from Ormond Beach — he relies on film work for his main source of income, but music is making a comeback. Last year, he and Anna founded Random Act Records to bring jazz musicians such as UCF professor Jeff Rupert to a wider audience. The label name derives from “random acts of kindness” — a 10% “artistic tithe” goes to non-profits. Label artists have made top 10 and top 50 jazz charts.

Anna, 45, actor Don Johnson’s assistant on “Miami Vice” before becoming an award-winning short-film maker, created film company Random Acts Entertainment with Scott, 52, in 2008. They hope to shoot Bones of the Master, based on author George Crane’s account of his unlikely journey with a Buddhist monk returning to China. “Now I’m the guy who goes to investors and says, ‘I need $40 million for this.’”

TONY ADAMO “Miles of Blu” Random Act Records Others, like Gil Scott-Heron, Mark Murphy and legions of rappers, have recognized the power of the almighty Word. Some have been hip, some sung, some said, but none have the musical import and impact of Tony Adamo’s artistry.

Tony has essentially created a new genre: “HipSpokenWord.” His inventions are certainly hip and relevant; they are mostly spoken, though occasionally sung; and the words are extremely powerful and relevant. With the assistance of Producer Mike Clark, one of the most renowned Jazz/Funk drummers to ever wield sticks, Tony has concocted a topical masterpiece in “Miles of Blu.”

Featuring Drummer/Producer Clark on all tracks, this sizzling album includes several other gifted musicians, including Bassist Richie Goods, Trumpeters Tim Ouimette and Derrick Garner, Percussionist Bill Summers, Organist Delbert Bump, Pianist Michael Wolff, and even Tower of Power’s physician of funk, Stephen “Doc” Kupka.

Tony’s hipster persona belies his intriguing background. Born in San Francisco, he has performed a myriad of tasks in the entertainment industry: He has been an actor, a DJ, a voiceover artist, a rock singer and a Hollywood agent. His stint as an explosives handler at Naval and Marine bases, including a voluntary deployment to the Middle East during the first Gulf War, provided creative fodder for many of his compositions. After connecting with members of the venerated funk machine Tower of Power, Tony developed his unique contribution to culture, the hip-spoken-word style that is all his own.

His methods have been featured previously on his own albums, including “When Love Comes Over You,” “Dance of Love,” “Straight-Up Deal,” and “What Is Hip?” While all have been a groove, with players like the TOP Horns, The Headhunters and Jazz greats Eddie Henderson, Steve Gadd, Ernie Watts and Neil Larsen on-board, his new release, “Miles of Blu,” is the culmination of years of musical experimentation and execution. Opening with a tribute to the hardest working man (ever) in show biz, “JB” jump-starts the affair with funkified horns and Tony’s urgings to have a “funky good time.” As with all the tracks, this is thoughtful, well-executed music played by incredible players.

The burning swinger “Miles of Blu” is up next. Tony sets the evocative mood, as he places the listener smack-dab in the midst of an urban jazz club. Tim Ouimette’s trumpet echoes miles of smiles as Tony calls out his tribute to the dark prince of Jazz. A bass-less tune, based on a ‘round midnight vibe…The Bay Area is our next stop: Adamo’s roll call of B-3 Bombers tells it like it is on “Funkin’ at the Chickn’ Shack” and, somewhere, Jimmy Smith grins.

On the topical “America R We Free” Tony tells a potentially patriotic tale of a country divided. The former bomb handler knows of what he speaks – “…on the backs of the middle-class and poor.” All respect; all truth; all the time. Power to the people!!! Stand Up and Get UP! This is a thinking man’s rap, and this revolution might be televised.

Next, Tony lays out a barbeque (“BBQ”) as he performs a real backyard rap and introduces the band. All are bumping, but under and behind it all, Mike Clark stokes the beat, allowing the cats to ride on top. You can taste the beer, feel the grease…Richie Goods sets up the low-down vamp of “The Power of Funky Madness”; Danny Draher sings the blues on his six-string; Tony tells it like it is, and will be…

Some Tower of Power East Bay grease slides our way next. The leader speaks truth again, urging us to inoculate our souls as his stream-of-consciousness glides across the syncopated snare snaps from Clark’s tubs. “Soul Vaccination” all across the nation! Another TOP hit changes things up, as Adamo and crew shuffle off like stallions through the middle of a stream. Heed his advice: “Don’t Change Horses” unless you dare encounter Steve Homan’s bluesy guitar, Delbert Bump’s slick B-3 riffs and Rob Dixon’s phat tenor tones.

The father of Hip/Spoken/Word pays further homage to the Godfather of Soul as he asks the perennial question “Ain’t That a Groove?” Word: Yes! It can’t but BE a groove under the tightly controlled flails of drummer/producer Clark, keyboardist/mixer Gary Mielke’s bass lines and Bill Summers’ slashing percussion discussion. Ouimette talks some talk on the bone; Adamo demands an answer – Ain’t that?

“Jack Kerouac, Jack!” was one of THE original hipsters. Obviously a predecessor of Maestro Adamo, this beat recognizes the contributions of the first Beats. Rob Dixon’s plaintive tenor moans over the proceedings, and, once again, a silenced voice is suddenly New-Jack as the writer is on the road again, now married to the names of Jazz greats also long-gone. After such a road trip, it’s time to blast off with “Sun-Ra Rockets to Mars” – This science fiction is for real. There has never been a hipper trip: Space is the place! Clark tips as Ouimette sizzles on top, Harmon mute firmly in-place. The girls sing us back to Earth, but we’re better for the journey. After all the ‘que, miles of blu, shuffling horses, et al, there ain’t nothin’ left but to ask “What Is Hip?” Tony Adamo knows, and it shows. He adheres to the original sacred text, but in HIS way. Speaking the well-crafted lyrics actually adds a layer to meaning, making us all ponder the age-old query. As Tony knows, sometimes it’s more important to know what’s not hip, too. As on the TOP original, the horns keep shouting and the organ keeps bumpin’ – That’s Delbert Bump.

Dig it on the serious side. If you want to get hip the the original. Then open up your ears to Mike Clark's performance on Hancock's album Thrust (1974), and particularly the song “Actual Proof”, is often cited as one of the finest examples of the linear funk style of drumming. Music Review on 9 MILES OF BLU

Tony Adamo, best known as a soulful singer in the vein of Dr. John, Ray Charles and Mose Allison who loves Tower of Power and the Headhunters, performs a tribute to jazz on his popular “9 Miles Of Blu.” The performance gives listeners an idea what rap might have sounded like if it had stuck to storytelling and de-emphasized endless rhymes.

Actually this performance, which has Adamo serving as a narrator over several uptempo straight ahead grooves played by guitarist Steve Homan, and Mike Clark on drums, is not only a throwback to Gil-Scott Heron in the 1970s but to Louis Jordan in the 1940s. Adamo talks about the excitement of jazz, and wanting to be part of that world. He pays a brief verbal tribute to such notables as Monk, Miles, Trane, Diz, Bird, Lou Donaldson, Jimmy Smith and others.

Throughout Tony Adamo’s fast talking and his colorful words, the excitement of jazz is conveyed, making listeners want to check out some of the greats from both past times and today’s jazz scene.

Legendary drummer, Mike Clark (Herbie Hancock and the Headhunters) and the highly respected musician, trumpet player, big band leader and music arranger, Tim Ouimette recently completed the mix for vocal/hip- spokenword artist, Tony Adamo’s new CD at Ouimette’s recording studio in upstate New York. Smooth jazz vocalist Tony Adamo grooves on this latest session with a mix of originals and favorite songs. “Cold Duck Time,” “Eleanor Rigby,” “The Way You Do the Things You Do “and Grover Washington Jr.’s “ Make Me a Memory” share the program with Adamo originals that carry plenty of swing along with lush harmony. He’s backed by ensembles that provide a keyboard-bass-drums-backup-singer kind of texture where a featured singer can push his message and know that his musical partners won’t miss a beat.

“What Is Hip?” puts him into an updated jack Kerouac bag where spoken word melds with the ensemble’s texture and alternates with his lyrical delivery. A popping electric bass and a Miles Davis muted echo (from Eddie Henderson) help the piece along and provide more than a glimpse of what it takes to remain hip. Later, “Rio de Janeiro Blue” paints an opposing portrait where soulful moans give an assist to the song’s interesting message.

“Nine Miles of Blue” gives the CD a hefty punch through Adamo’s convincing vocal rendering. By combining spoken word on several tracks with his lyrical delivery elsewhere, the singer turns in a great performance.

It's bad enough that the nation's jobless rate is 9.7%. But the real national employment rate is even higher than the U.S. Department of Labor's figure shows. Can you dig 16% or higher. With that in mind it's damn hard for me to get hip to what the N.B.A. players want. Under an equity arrangement,players would give up some of money that is now guaranteed. That's right. Talkin' bout give it up or turn it loose.How bout the N.B.A. guarantee that for every home game played. The players will donate money in there home city to help feed the poor. Makin' 2.5 million comeing off the bench to play 3 min in a N.B.A. game. and maybe not play at all. Is sick. The N.B.A. needs a drastically different approach.

Tony Adamo Meets Tower Of Power Meets The Headhunters

A new CD that has recently been recorded is being described as “Tony Adamo meets Tower of Power meets The Headhunters” set to be released in early 2012. This unique set teams together singer and spoken word artist Tony Adamo with drummer-producer Mike Clark, several members of the Headhunters and special guests. The drummer says of the project, “The three elements on the CD are rhythm and blues (we married some old ideas with some newer surprises), a heavy blues saturation and some straight ahead bebop. There is even some avant-garde music and a duet with drums and voice.”

In addition to Tony Adamo, the lineup of musicians include Rob Dixon on tenor, alto and keyboards, trumpeters Derrick Gardner and Pharez Whitted, guitarist-keyboardist Gary Mielke, organist Delbert Bump, guitarist Steve Homan, bassist Brett Palm, percussionist Bill Summers, Mike Clark on drums and co-founder of Tower of Power, Doc Kupka on bari sax.

The musical friendship of Adamo and Clark began about six years ago. Tony, whose warm deep voice is perfectly at home in a variety of settings whether it is soul or swing, is a creative improviser with an accessible yet unpredictable style. His style is friendly, personable, very musical, and open to spontaneity as can be heard on his two prior recordings, STAIGHT UP DEAL and WHAT IS HIP. Mike Clark says of Tony, “He sings with soul and also does spoken word along with the singing. He is not afraid to address issues that are pertinent to what is going on in the world. He will often have a sketch for a song and then, when we are in the studio, he spontaneously fills it in and improvises, sometimes taking the music in a completely different direction.”

Mike Clark is one of the most in-demand drummers on the scene today. Earlier in his career he played with vibraphonist Bobby Hutcherson, trumpeter Woody Shaw and tenor-saxophonist Joe Henderson. After beginning an association with Herbie Hancock that resulted in him becoming the drummer with the Headhunters, he became well known as a funk drummer although he remains very active in jazz. Among his recent projects have been leading the straight ahead acoustic group Integral Blue which includes Randy Brecker, Donald Harrison and Christian McBride; touring with guitarist Scott Henderson and bassist Jeff Berlin in an electric band performing Wayne Shorter tunes; and recording with keyboardist Michael Wolff’s quartet. In addition he co-leads the Headhunters with Bill Summers. The Headhunters recent CD release is called PLATINUM.

Tony says “The music is in a different and new genre.” Mike Clark is also enthusiastic about the project which is the first time he produced a singer. “We were all really glad to play together and it translates. The music tips its hat towards the days in Oakland when Tower of Power reigned. It has elements of James Brown and some real modern funk. All the music was so swinging and so funky that it was very enjoyable for us and we are very glad to be putting out the music soon.” Tony Adamo’s new CD will be released in a few months and it promises to make a strong impact on the music world.

“Yo’ into somethin’ bro,” was Mike Clark’s comment to Tony Adamo when he heard Adamo’s new vocalize/hip spoken word. This was the deciding moment when Clark, legendary drummer and co-leader of the Headhunters, formerly (Herbie Hancock and the Headhunters) decided to produce Adamo’s new CD. The recording site was Owl Studio Records (Static Shack Studios), Indianapolis, Indiana. Clark started things off by bringing in super percussionist and long time Headhunter band member, Bill Summers who laid down his percussion tracks at an earlier recording session along with Rob Dixon (tenor, alto and keyboards), and Gary Mielke (bass, keyboards). Two Owl recording artists Derrick Gardner (trumpet) and Pharez Whitted (trumpet) added their mojo jazz/funk chops to Adamo’s tracks while playing alongside Dixon in the horn section. In December, the final touch of hipness will be added when Stephen “Doc” Kupka, co-founder of Tower of Power, adds his signature horn sound to Adamo’s re-groove of two TOP hits. The music foundation for Adamo’s new hip sound is Delbert Bump (organ), Steve Homen (guitar), Brett Palm (bass), and Mike Clark (drums). Vocalist Tony Adamo’s new CD, What Is Hip?, is a funkified and deeply rhythmic locked affair with some of the best musicians of the day. Put together by master guitarist and producer Jerry Stucker, this horn-laden album reminds one of the early days of Tower Of Power (TOP) brought up to date by modern sensibilities. Some of the big names assisting Adamo include master drummer Steve Gadd, percussionist and Headhunter Bill Summers, trumpeters Mic Gillette, Henry Hung, and Eddie Henderson, as well as TOP bari saxophone soul man Stephen “Doc” Kupka and keyboardist Rodney Franklin.

For those unfamiliar with funk and soul the easiest comparison of this album would be with some of the early work of Boz Scaggs when he was wrapping his vocals within bluesy soul-infected wraps. Add some tastefully arranged horn backgrounds courtesy of Mic Gillette, and the result is sublime excellence.

While funk and rarified soul like this will have a tough time reaching the airwaves, that doesn’t mean it isn’t a fantastic recording. The “What Is Hip?” TOP remake is given a bluesy and smoothly swinging turn that features some excellent electric trumpet work by the great jazz trumpeter Eddie Henderson. On “Ecstasy” Neil Larsen’s organ playing is top-notch and Rodney Franklin’s keyboard work on “Rhythm Of Your Love” is incredible.

Throughout the recording Stucker’s guitar is ever present as a featured color. His work is angled at finding the right mode of expression as opposed to showing off his chops. Finding just the right notes at the right time, Stucker keeps things tightly bolted down and firmly rooted in the groove. This is shown nowhere better than on “Ecstasy” where his lines float and punctuate Adamo’s vocals in pure precision.

Adamo’s voice is perfectly suited each of the tracks, both those he wrote with Stucker and the covers. With a rich baritone timbre, Adamo sincerely gets inside the lyrics as opposed to just singing them. Working within the arrangements, as opposed to singing on top of them, Adamo does more than feel the phrase, he becomes them.

While there are a few missteps, like the cover of “Eleanor Rigby” which is too sly, Adamo hits it out of the park on “Cold Duck Time (Groove On Line)” and “Make Me A Memory.” For lovers of music not aimed being aimed for 14 year-olds, this is about as excellent a recording as you will find and well worth searching jazzreview.com

The strong Tower of Power horn section does an outstanding job and a funky sax solo makes the song even more enjoyable. San Francisco Bay area singer/songwriter Tony Adamo delivers some of his best work to date with his remake of Tower of Power's “Groove Therapy.” “Groove Therapy” is a cut from Adamo's CD Straight Up Deal, and this is a vibrant, earthy track with a definite 70s feel and all the funk you can handle. The horn section features members of the original Tower of Power horn section, and Tony smoothly delivers the “therapy,” musically speaking, that is. The “doctor” is definitely in the house. With crisp music, a nice guitar solo break, and the band at the top of their game, “Groove Therapy” comes together in a style that most can only envy. Latin Musicians Threaten to Sue the Grammys

The increasingly bitter dispute that erupted early in April when the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences announced it was eliminating 31 categories from the Grammy Awards notched up yet another step on Thursday when a New York law firm announced plans to sue the academy on behalf of musicians who play Latin jazz, one of the categories that is being dropped.

At a news conference in Manhattan, the drummer Bobby Sanabria, one of the Latin jazz musicians who has been most vocal in criticizing the Academy’s action and in leading efforts to restore all 31 categories, also called for a national boycott against CBS, which broadcasts the Grammy Awards show each February. Speaking in both English and Spanish, he urged viewers to refrain from watching programs on the network and to write letters of protest to corporations sponsoring shows on CBS.

“This is the most blatant example of racism in the history of any arts organization,” Mr. Sanabria maintained, noting that nearly three-quarters of the categories being eliminated are dedicated to the music of racial or ethnic minorities. “The Grammys have kept pace with the cultural diversity of this country” up to now, he added, but eliminating 31 categories constitutes “a slap in the face to cultural and musical diversity.”

Mr. Sanabria’s lawyer, Roger Maldonado of Balber Pickard Maldonado & Van Der Tuin, said he planned to file a class action suit on behalf of Latin jazz musicians in New York, which would claim that the academy’s trustees “abdicated their fiduciary duty to safeguard the interests of all members of the academy” and inflicted damage on the livelihoods of practitioners of Latin jazz with their action. “The trustees chose instead to rubber-stamp a secretive process that serves the interests only of those popular performers who already enjoy broad exposure.”

Several performers, including several winners of Grammy Awards, have already announced their support for the campaign to reinstate the eliminated categories, which range from traditional blues to Hawaiian and Cajun music. Among the prominent supporters of the restoration campaign cited by Mr. Sanabria are Paul Simon, Bill Cosby, Carlos Santana, Bonnie Raitt, Herbie Hancock and Rubén Blades.

“This is a peer-based award, not like American Idol,” Mr. Sanabria said, arguing that the academy’s action was pushing the Grammy Awards away from its stated mission to reward musical excellence, and not popularity. “We’re trying to restore the dignity of working musicians.”

The academy could not immediately be reached for comment.

Over the last few weeks, much more has been learned about the factors and the people behind the decision to drop the Latin Jazz Grammy category In response and in solidarity with other music communities, we have now reopened the Petition demanding the NARAS leadership to rescind this action, and restore the Grammy Awards for all these categories, and not just for Latin Jazz. Veteran crooner Tony Adamo, with his own jazzy/bluesy style of successfully taking a tune to whatever level he chooses, does a wonderful job of doing just that here with his latest, What Is Hip? Why that title? One guess. You got it! He’s recruited a couple of members of the notorious Tower of Power to help out on a few tracks on this project. Can’t do a thing but help, right?

The rhythm is snappy, bluesy, jazzy, bright, and full of character that Adamo always brings to every studio visit. One listen to the lead track, “Cold Duck Time (Groove On Line),” Rhythm of Your Love,” Grover’s “Make Me a Memory,” TOP’s poppin’ classic “What is Hip?,” and the oh-so-smooth-and-melodic “Ecstasy,” and you’ve got the picture.

These tracks are quite simply superb selections by one who knows how to pick ‘em and how to write ‘em. One who knows how to feel ‘em and be able to tell if they’re “ripe” enough for his listening public. He generally doesn’t miss. The good ones seldom do.

In addition to writing really appealing originals, what Adamo does to the Beatles’ “Eleanor Rigby” is remarkable. He makes a statement. There are other covers here that he does quite well (Richard Torrance’s “Rio De Janiero Blue” and The Temptations’ “The Way You Do The Things You Do” are two), but this one deserves a standing ovation.

Back to those catchy originals, “Nine Miles of Blue,” quite possibly my favorite here with its blues flavor, takes on the soul in places where real bluesmen live. The Hammond, the horns, Adamo’s vocals, and the melody all hook and just stay with you. I’m sure that was his intent, and it worked. He follows that with an upbeat yet still rather bluesy track, “Mystery,” which takes off in a funky kinda way with plenty of attitude.

Adamo closes with the Tower of Power team behind him as they belt out the TOP original “This Time’s It’s Real,” which will make a believer out of any doubter. Adamo is back with a swagger and a product in hand that should easily sell itself.
