Felix Stussi has always been a composer in the true sense of the word. His approach is very eclectic. The result, however, is homogeneous and authentic. This is mostly due to the fact that he has studied (masters degree in ethnomusicology, University of Zurich, 1997) and incorporated the different sources of inspiration into his own playing and writing.
Felix Stussi creats songs and sounds like a painter with a vaste choice of colors. He is not afraid of unusual mixes, such as confronting modernity with tradition.
Therefore it is not surprising that Stussi's music is of refreshing actuality without neglecting the roots. It could be called post retro worldjazz. Colors in the head of the composer are one thing, but it also takes the right canvas to paint on. Stussi's quintet unites some of Canada's finest young talents.
Felix Stussi himself was born in the Glarus Valley, Switzerland. Originally self-taught on the piano, he soon became a successful performer and sideman. He has attended masterclasses with Irene Schweizer, Markus Bischof, Christoph Baumann, Art Lande, Vince Benedetti, Fred Hersch and Jean-Christophe Cholet. In 1996 he won the first prizes (best soloist; best band) at the Zollikon Jazz Festival, Switzerland.
Felix Stussi moved to Montreal in 1998, where he lives today and pursues a career as a pianist, composer, arranger and bandleader. In 2005, he toured Switzerland with his quintet. In 2006, he obtained a composing grant of the Conseil des arts et des lettres du Qurbec as well as CD production-subsidies by Musicaction. His first CD, Give Me Five, has been released in Canada (LOCAL Distribution) in April 2007 and in Europe (Unit Records) in August 2007. This first album has been very well received by both, critics and public. The group Felix Stussi & Give Me Five has won the prestigious the General Motors Grand Jazz Award of Festival International de Jazz de Montreal 2007.
The second CD of the quintet, Baiji, also featuring trombonist Ray Anderson, has been released on June 17, 2008, on Justin Time Records.
Felix Stussi is married and father of two children.
