Born: January 19, 1982    Primary Instrument:

Japhlet Bire Attias grew up in New York State, Central and Caribbean Mexico and Minnesota, surrounded by music from the very beginning. Fueling his desire to perform and create was everything from Yes, Emerson, Lake and Palmer and King Crimson, to Brazilian and Mexican music, Björk, French singers, Jazz, Classical and Jungle. At 22, after having been a guitarist for 7 years, he first picked up the stick and immediately started performing. From Stick seminars and festivals, to Jazz clubs and bars, to Progressive rock and Improvisation in duo and Trio settings in Mexico and the U.S., Japhlet has covered many genres and age groups in his musical expeditions. His live shows feature the Stick in many forms, and can also include live looping, electronic and acoustic percussion, synths and beats. In the fall of 2005, Japhlet co-founded the Pan-Metropolitan Trio, a small jazz outfit made up of UM alumni Stefan Kac on the Tuba, and Owen Weaver on Drums and Percussion. Playing an eclectic mix of Jazz, Classical and Rock, they have performed at cafes, bars, restaurants, major Jazz clubs and recently at the first national Stick festival in Ann Arbor, MI, alongside such Stick greats as Greg Howard, Steve Adelson, Bob Culbertson and Emmett Chapman himself (the creator of the instrument). Their debut CD “Isolation” was released in Nov. 2007. In addition to the former, Japhlet has performed with the very popular Nothing Static of Minneapolis, Stick Up! with Minneapolis sax player Doug Little and drummer Haralds Bondaris, and has formed the experimental Stick duo Relative Encryption with Stickist Ben Weber. Japhlet now proudly presents his breakthrough debut solo album featuring his mix of World Music, Jazz, Classical, Progressive, Electronic and Visual Art featuring some of Minnesota’s Twin Cities finest musicians playing Drums, Sax, Bass Clarinet, Viola, Tuba, Congas and Guitar.
