Marky Quayle
My dad loved music and had it playing in the house all the time when he was home. It was a happy time. Many of the songs I know now, I learned before I was 8 years old listening to my father's records. Two of Dad's closest friends were musical greats George Shearing and Les Brown (The Band Of Renown).
They often stayed in our house when I was growing up. When I was six, the Mary Kaye Trio sang live in my father's living room. This inspired me so much I knew right then I wanted to be a singer. My first professional singing job didn't come til I was 20 years old, when I was hired by the great Jazz guitarist Jerry Hahn to be the vocalist with his 6 piece band. After a couple of years working with Jerry, I branched out on my own and booked my own jobs.
After 4 years singing professionally, it became clear that "Standards", the songs I'd learned to love as a child, were not popular any more at that time. I had to sing Top 40 music, pop songs over and over again, whether I liked the songs or not, in order to work nice rooms with decent pay. This was not artistically inspiring. I couldn't be myself and express the songs that meant so much to me. And not being one who'd be willing to go the 'Starving Artist Routine', I left the music field, started Quayle & Company Awnings & Marine Canvas and entered the business world for the next 30 years. Then, recently, in 2004, God inspired me to return to the music He has gifted me with and the music I love so much. Fortunately these "Standards" have never lost their allure to me. I also find they are becoming more mainstream again, 'rediscovered', so to speak as is evidenced by even Rock N Roll stars recording these American Classical Tunes and going platinum with these very songs.
Since returning to the pursuit of musical excellence, I have recorded 3 Gospel records and 5 Jazz Standards CD's all since November of 2006 ("One December Day" has thus far been released, w/2 more to follow this Spring).
I am thankful to be using my gift again, is truly A Gift to me.

This San Francisco native is a compelling singer with a refreshingly velvet vocal sound who has absorbed what all great Jazz vocalists know in their souls: the importance of 'owning' a song and delivering its poignant story.
