Born: February 10, 1955 Primary Instrument: Guitar
I was inspired to start playing in the early 70s by British progressive bands such as Soft Machine and avant American jazzers and jazz rockers like Coltrane, Miles Davis and Chicago. Guitar has always been my main instrument but I have been involved in the London improv scene for five or six years as a clarinetist although I prefer not to draw lines round my musical activities. I worked my way through various bands in the 80s and 90s and now enjoy a varied and diverse range of musical activities from the prog-jazz of the band Astrakan to various stable combinations of improvisers, notably a trio with pianist Phil Somervell and drummer Paul May. I also have a strong interest in composition and the possibilities of writing for freely improvising musicians and loosely structured forms which are shaped but encourage performer freedom, collaboration and contribution.
