Bradford Truby

They define jazz as a method of playing, rather than a style or genre of music, imploring spontaneous interpretation. These members of the MTV generation use the music they grew-up with, songs such as “White Wedding” and “Cult Of Personality,” as a springboard for improvisation. They believe that jazz should be both introspective and accessible. Bradford Truby on upright bass, Bryan Besse on drums, and Chris Marsceill on keyboards/piano have been playing together for four years. Truby began playing Upright bass at 18, Besse started on drums at 12, and at age 4 Marsceill began playing piano. The goal of their music is to bring jazz to a new generation, exposing younger crowds to great jazz musicians and writers, while appealing to older fans as well. Their list of influences contains the likes of Thelonious Monk, Miles Davis, Bill Evans, James Booker, Scott Lafaro, Charles Mingus, Elvin Jones, and Max Roach. They want to evolve jazz beyond fake book standards by quoting something familiar, resulting in eclectic mixes such as Coltrane with The Beatles, and Herbie Hancock with Prince, molding together to form a powerful new voice in Jazz for the new millennium. Their music has the fingerprints of rock, funk, hip-hop, and traditional jazz--infusing rock energy with jazz sensibility. The trio performs regularly at the New Orleans Fairmont Hotel and Storyville Jazz Parlor on Bourbon Street.
