Part of the Canvas

Thursday, December 25, 2008 By Melissa Byron

Atonal stop-and-go melodies backed by strained grunts and monotone proclamations are pretty standard for experimental jazz quartet A Probe Called Gnomes. Also commonplace are syncopations embedded in time signatures that require an advanced degree to count out. Gnomes drummer Tommy Monaghan, pictured in front with guitarist Anthony Digennaro, is taking the experimentation a bit further with his group this Friday: They will dress in white and have an artist paint their bodies while playing. “Some of the canvas will be us,” Glastonbury-native Monaghan says. The venue is Middletown's intimate Buttonwood Tree Center, so arrive early to get a space.
