Cape May Traditional Jazz Society

The newly formed Cape May Traditional Jazz Society is a non-profit organization whose purpose is to develop, educate, promote and enjoy Traditional Jazz in south Jersey. We hope to keep this great music alive and affordably available in this area.

Traditional Jazz is Dixieland, Ragtime, Blues, New Orleans Style music. This jazz is truly one of the truly original American art forms. It all started in the late 19th century in the Black and Creole communities and later adopted by white bands. The first jazz recording was made by The Original Dixieland Jass Band on January 30, 1917. The roaring twenties brought Dixieland into its heyday. It was a polyphonic improvisation of seven instruments – coronet, clarinet, trombone, piano, drums, banjo and tuba- in a unique style.
