Linus Wyrsch

Clarinetist/Saxophonist Linus Wyrsch, is a frequently booked recording and live artist based on the East Coast, with a passion for jazz, Brazilian and Latin music. He is known for his bright yet mellow sound and his versatility. Currently, he is working with several groups in and around New York City. Next to teaching private lessons, he keeps busy working with his own groups ‘Bossa Avenue’ featuring brazilian guitarist Ronaldo Lobo and with ‘Linus Clarifies!’, a new project which puts the clarinet in a more modern light. His skilled group blends elements of jazz, fusion, R&B, Brazilian and Latin American music in order to create a unique and contemporary playground for the rarely heard clarinet. Since 2009, Linus is also successfully producing and hosting his own Jazz Radio-Show for breakthruradio.com.

Born and raised in Switzerland, Linus was still too young when he first had the desire to pick up the clarinet. Though inspired and challenged by classical lessons with Christa Schneider, he found himself drawn to improvised music as well. Lessons with Peter Wespi, an established jazz saxophonist and educator, were added to Linus’ schedule. Additionally, he pursued lessons with Roland von Flüe at the Jazz School Lucerne during two semesters. After gaining experience as a performer, Linus would play more regularly with his father, a semi-professional bassist ” sometimes even with well-known guest performers.

Having heard about Berklee College of Music by musicians such as saxophonist Javon Jackson, Linus began preparations under the mentorship of Swiss musicians Peter Wespi and Pius Baumgartner. Thanks to the support of his parents and teachers, Linus moved to Boston to attend Berklee College of Music in 2006. His decision to major in Music Business/Management let him gain experiences as an intern at the famous booking agency Ted Kurland Associates and as an assistant to a recording artist. Linus quickly made a name for himself as a clarinetist and received a Berklee Achievment Scholarship. During his time in Boston, he recorded and performed extensively, amongst others with The BandA EcLectics and Akousma. He also had the chance to learn from renowned teachers Frank Tiberi, Shannon LeClaire, Fred Lipsius, Oscar Stagnaro, Victor Mendoza, Mark Whitfield, Peter Cokkinias, Fernando Brandao, Mark Shilanksy and more.

Upon graduating Summa Cum Laude from Berklee in 2008, Linus relocated to New York City. While getting more involved in the Big Apple’s jazz scene during the Fall of 2008, Berklee’s “50 Years of Bossa Nova” celebration gave him not only the opportunity to jam with and open two concerts for Cesar Camargo Mariano with a student and alumni band, but also to be part of an Orchestra accompanying a concert of the legendary Oscar Castro-Neves. In summer 2009 Linus traveled to Japan for a successful tour with flutist Akiko Iko and her Brazilian group and in February 2010 he was part of a West Coast tour with Funk/Rock band ‘Red Abbey’. Inspired by his peers, he looks forward to continuing to play with New York’s preeminent music talents, and making a lasting mark on the scene with his radio show and live performances.

Performances included: Oscar Castro-Neves, Cesar Camargo Mariano, Howard Shore, Oscar Stagnaro, Gary Kelly, Thomas Moeckel, Kalli Gerhards, Petros Sakelliou and The BandA ecLectics, Vinzenz Kummer, Sab Charunas, Claude Diallo, James Kinney and many more

“With a depth of feeling that belies his disciplined classical technique, Wyrsch demonstrates why it’s past time for this expressive but long-overlooked instrument to return to the fore.” - Bill Barnes, www.jazz.com
