Born and raised in Regina, Saskatchewan, Bess Durey carving out her own unique space as an impressive singer, composer and bandleader on the Canadian Jazz scene. With a “fluid and pitch-perfect voice”, Bess is on the forefront of a new generation of Canadian Jazz singers. Her refreshingly natural soprano tone floats above the backdrop of her many talents as an improviser, lyricist and composer. Bess performs with a genuine emotional authenticity that dazzles her audiences, singing from the heart “with a knowing that bellies her youth”. A graduate of the Capilano University Jazz Studies program, Bess is a singer who is also a great bandleader ”a musician's musician. Her band is made up of some of the brightest up-and comers on the Canadian jazz scene and is a sophisticated new breed of original jazz. Their delight in the music is heart-warmingly evident at every show, instinctively peeling away at categorization to reveal an intimate merging of music and message.
