New York Based Turkish flutist,composer and a band leader Sarpay Özçağatay Graduated from Hacettepe University Ankara State Conservatory(2002) 94.70 GPA out of 100 also Berklee College of Music major in Jazz Performance(2012) 3.89 GPA out of 4.
Meanwhile, he was studying in Hacettepe University State Conservatory, he developed an interest in jazz playing but didn’t have anywhere to study the art of jazz flute playing while in Turkey. Despite the lack of jazz education Sarpay managed to take lessons with Turkish and American jazz musicians occasionally and played in jazz jam sessions whenever he could. After his graduation from the Conservatory he focused on jazz music more and formed a jazz band called BE-TONE with Turkish friends of his. This group was a jazz funk fusion and freestyle quartet and played some well-known jazz festivals and private concerts For instance;
12th International Ankara Jazz Festival, 7th Eskisehir Jazz Musicians Festival, and he also performed at well known music venues and concert halls throughout Turkey. In June, 2009, he collaborated in jazz workshops with Jon Metzger.
Then he got accepted as a full scholarship to Berklee College of Music which is one of the most prestigious music schools in the world. After his graduation(May 2012), he moved to New York City and pursuing his career there. He recorded his First album called 'The Sharp Eye Project' will be released on the New Year.
He is also the winner of the “Billboard Magazine Award” in 2011, this is one of the most prestigious scholarship award given through Berklee College of Music.
He has also played with famous Jazz Legends and Musicians such as: Ron Carter,Kevin Eubanks,David Fiuczynski,Terri Lyne Carrington,Eric Gould,Greg Osby,Ed Tomassi,Steve Turre and many more.
Sarpay is not only a stage performer, he is also a studio musician and composer as well,
