Born: January 2, 1978 Primary Instrument: Bass, acoustic
Knu Gmoon (‘New Moon’) Project is a Brooklyn-based sextet with a fresh and intuitive approach to modern jazz and improvisation. A fusion of simple, straightforward musical ideas (folk/indigenous), with more propellent and/or complex musical ideas (environmental), both react to the other’s different speed, intensity, and mood, forming an exciting and new mode for improvisation.
Bassist/composer Noah Jarrett leads the group with a strong backbone and rhythmic prowess, as drummer/tabla Rohin Khemani and percussionist Rich Stein weave and propel the groove forward. Mike Gamble, a virtuoso guitarist, syncopates and adds to the already colorful spectrum, while laying a foundation for many beautiful melodies and improvisations to arise from alto saxophone/flutist Loren Stillman and tenor/soprano/flutist Tony Barba. Against a strong backdrop of groove and musical chemistry, solos and melodies hover and combine to bring to ears a new reality in jazz and improvisation.
