July 19, 2011 The Jazz Project Big Band is one of San Diego's brightest jazz aggregations, composed of the area's finest amateur and professional musicians. The band holds public rehearsals Monday evenings, 7:30 to 9:30 PM at the San Diego Elks Club #168, located at 7430 Jackson Dr. in the San Carlos area--- and has been performing in the San Diego area at Dizzy’s, Humphrey’s Back Stage Lounge, the Lafayette Hotel and the Escondido Center for the Performing Arts. Marty Conley, lead trumpet player and talented arranger, provides sparkling arrangements of jazz standards and each section features rock solid ensemble playing. The 9 brass, 5 sax, and 3 rhythm musical aggregation are entertaining souls that enjoy people pleasing, toe tapping, mind-candy music making! The instrumental soloists are a vital piece of the band’s presentation who provide a taste of tradition and creative exploration to stimulate the most ardent jazz fan. Bruce Cameron, David Castel de Oro, Tim Jameson, Gary Bucher, & Chuck Gardner often are featured soloists at concerts and --- Mike Masessa provides the solid jazz drum beat. The director, Michael Smith, retired from his teaching duties at the San Diego School of Creative and Performing Arts jazz program in June of 2000 and leads the ensemble. In two words, "They entertain!"
