Hetty Kate

Hetty Kate is a vocalist based in Melbourne, Australia - singing jazz.. including trad jazz, jump swing, latin and blues. When in town, she performs regularly at some of the top spots such as The Paris Cat and Dizzys Jazz Club - along with great local bars and hotels. 2009 is a busy year, with the majority of time spent overseas in Asia, Europe, North America and South America making music with local bands and great friends - and with two albums being released!

One is a beautiful jaunt down memory lane with Sam Lemann, and is called “A Late Brunch on Irwell Street”, this really showcases all artists talents and as the title suggests is perfect for a relaxing afternoon in the sunshine. The second album is still in post production, and it's an exotic blend of tiki-surf-lounge-martini-jazz - featuring originals, standards and modern covers. Get set for this release later in the year.

“...Pure of tone, sweet sounding and dangerously infectious - English born, Melbourne based Hetty Kate has performed with some of Melbourne's finest jazz musicians. Audiences who have heard this leggy siren note the influences of classic Doris Day and modern day chanteuses such as Silje Neergard and Stacey Kent. Originally trained in classical piano and voice, Hetty Kate has developed her craft as a singer with not only a look, but a sound and depth that simply puts her in a class of her own...”

”...a charismatic and technically gifted vocalist whose gorgeous timbre carries echoes of Peggy Lee, June Christy and Julie London....”- Chris May, All About Jazz (Sep 22, 2011)

“…Hetty is based in Australia which is their massive good fortune and Britains loss. She has the most gently seductive 'little girl' voice I’ve heard since first encountering the (then!) young Ella and June Christy. And she has a masterful way with lyrics, bringing them to vibrant and exciting life as if each were an expression of her own private thoughts….we’ll hear a lot more of Hetty Kate in the future.” Brian Harvey - www.radiojazz.co.uk

“…Hetty Kate’s voice overflows with a natural musicality. Hetty can do no wrong, whether she is singing a familiar standard, infused with relaxed charm and style, or trying her hand at something new and filled with innocent bravado…” Richard Fields 3CR Radio Melb AU (www.3cr.org.au)

“…there is never a single note of irony in any of Hetty’s effortless interpretations of these old-time, all-time classic songs. This is a CD which can make any tough day sweet again…” H. William Stine, Turntable For One, WMNR-FM (wmnr.org)

“(It's) a great feeling when you recive a cd on your desk and it truly delivers when you put it in to listen. Beautiful enchanting and some fine reworking of Jazz Standards a big future ahead!” Christian Bragg, Head of Music. Jazz FM (www.jazzfm.com)

“Hetty's got a lovely relaxed way of singing that puts listeners at ease (rather like the wonderful Susannah McCorkle, now sadly dead). Some singers are so keen to show off their technique that one as a listner gets nervous. Hetty just swings along and takes us for a joyful ride, as Susannah did.. and she made 14 CDs for Concord in the '90s.” Steve Robertson “The Swinging Years”, 3RPC in Portland. 2-4 Thurs
