Producer/engineer Steve Bellamy is a specialist in jazz and chamber music recording, and the founder of Addo Records. He is well known for his musical approach to the production process, and his high standards for recording quality. He has worked with many great jazz and classical artists including Kirk MacDonald, David Virelles, Neil Swainson, Barry Romberg, Ted Quinlan, Kieran Overs, Ted Warren, Mike Murley, Rich Brown, Brian Dickinson, Jerry Bergonzi, Jim Vivian, Julie Lamontage, Dave Douglas, Steve Swallow, Donny McCaslin, The Gryphon Trio, Tafelmusik, Anton Kuerti, James Ehnes, Isabel Bayrakdarian, Joel Haynes, Seamus Blake, John Stetch, Andre White, Kevin Dean, and Jane Bunnett.
As a freelance engineer Steve focuses on jazz music recording and is in demand as an engineer, producer, and educator. He spent two years at The Banff Centre as Audio Fellow and Senior Recording Engineer where he worked with and recorded some of the greatest jazz and classical artists of our time including Joe Lovano, Kenny Wheeler, Dave Holland, Kenny Werner, Edgar Meyer, Dave Douglas, and many others. As a freelance recording engineer he has credits on more than 150 commercial CDs, many of which have been nominated or won Juno awards.
Steve has a Master of Music degree (sound recording) from McGill University where he studied music recording and producing with Wieslaw Woszczyk, Peter Cook, Steven Epstein, and George Massenburg. He also has a Bachelor of Music degree (saxophone) from the University of Prince Edward Island where he studied with Karem Simon. He has designed and taught courses in music recording and production at McGill University, The Banff Centre, the University of Hartford (Hartt School), and Humber College. Steve is associate dean of the School of Creative and Performing Arts at Toronto’s Humber College. In 2009 he launched the modern jazz label, Addo Records, and continues to work for other labels and artists as a freelance engineer/producer.
