What do you get if you take the solid, old-school jazzy-funky-soul musicianship of a jazz organ trio; and mix it with new-school style and production approaches? One result would be a modern concept album, Sketches of a Neighborhood by The Bass Mint Bros. In the tradition of Jimmy Smith, Jimmy McGriff, Herbie Hancock, and Booker T & The M.G.s comes an ambient musical journey, depicting a Saturday in the life of an underground musician; from “Awakened by a Noon Day Sun” to the Sunday morning sunrise of “Valley Park Groove.”

The Bass Mint Bros core membership consists of Yusef Bey on drums, percussion, keyboards, and electronic percussion; Barry Hughes on Bass (upright and electric) and guitar; and Mwalim on Hammond Organ, piano, and keyboards. All three have logged considerable time in the studio and on tour as session and backing musicians for a myriad of acts. In the production of Sketches of a Neighborhood, Mwalim reached back into his jazzy-soul bag of tricks, “With some of this, I reached back to the days when we recorded using two tape-decks patches together, and endless overdubbing to get some of the dirty sounds I was looking for.” The results are a warm, ambient sound that will win over soul, jazz and dance music fans alike. Perfect for blasting in the ride or grooving to at the bar.
